Recent progress in chemistry and bioactivity of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids from the genus gelsemium: a comprehensive review

Lin Wang et al.

Summary: In this review, recent progress in the study of a major class of active ingredients from the Gelsemium plants is comprehensively summarized. These ingredients possess diverse chemical structures and exhibit various bioactivities such as anti-tumor, immunosuppression, anti-anxiety, and analgesia. Their intriguing structures and pharmaceutical properties have attracted significant interest from organic chemists to develop state-of-the-art synthetic strategies. The review covers novel Gelsemium ingredients, potential pharmacological activities of some active molecules, and total synthetic strategies from 2013 to 2022, aiming to provide guidance for further study and development of Gelsemium ingredients and their derivatives in clinical practice.

The multicomponent residue depletion of Gelsemium elegans in pig tissues, urine, and plasma

Yong Wu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate tissue residue depletion in pigs fed G. elegans powder. Two quantitation methods, including a precise method and a semi-quantitation method, were developed and validated for the analysis of multiple components in pig tissues. The results showed that G. elegans alkaloids were widely distributed in pig tissues, and potential residue markers and target tissues were identified. The findings provide important scientific evidence for evaluating the safety of animal-derived food from G. elegans.

Toxicokinetics, in vivo metabolic profiling, and in vitro metabolism of gelsenicine in rats

Zheng Xiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolic profile and toxicokinetics of gelsenicine in rats using UPLC and mass spectrometry. The results revealed that gelsenicine is mainly metabolized in the liver and excreted through urine and bile. This study provides important information for the risk assessment and forensic identification of gelsenicine.

Natural plant toxins in honey: An ignored threat to human health

Sha Yan et al.

Summary: Consumers often believe that natural food is harmless, however naturally occurring toxins in food represent a health risk to humans. Toxic honey, collected by bees from poisonous plants, contains plant toxins such as grayanotoxins and triptolides that can be fatal if consumed. Understanding the toxicity mechanisms of different toxins, preventing toxic honey from entering the food chain, and developing effective antidotes and treatments are critical challenges.

In silico prediction of parkinsonian motor deficits-related neurotoxicants based on the adverse outcome pathway concept

Hung-Lin Kan et al.

Summary: Exposure to neurotoxicants has been associated with Parkinson's disease, but the identification of these neurotoxicants relies on animal models due to the clinical variation and slow progression of the disease. In this study, an innovative in silico model was proposed for predicting parkinsonian neurotoxicants. The model showed high specificity in ruling out non-neurotoxic chemicals and successfully predicted several chemicals related to parkinsonian motor deficits, providing a potential tool for prioritizing chemicals for further evaluations on Parkinson's disease potential.
