Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Effects of dibutyl phthalate on lipid metabolism in liver and hepatocytes based on PPARα/SREBP-1c/FAS/GPAT/AMPK signal pathway

Wang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that DBP can induce fatty liver disease by activating the PPAR alpha signaling pathway and inhibiting AMPK phosphorylation. The results indicated that DBP affects protein expression, leading to hyperlipidemia and abnormal liver function, which can be alleviated through the PPAR alpha/SREBP-1c/FAS/GPAT/AMPK signaling pathway.

Environmental fate, toxicity and risk management strategies of nanoplastics in the environment: Current status and future perspectives

Liuwei Wang et al.

Summary: Tiny plastic particles, including microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), are considered emerging contaminants with formation mechanisms such as mechanical abrasion. Research on the environmental fate and ecosystem toxicity of NPs is limited compared to MPs, calling for further exploration in these areas.

Microplastic contamination in Indian edible mussels (Perna perna and Perna viridis) and their environs

Jamila Patterson et al.

Summary: This study found that smaller mussels ingest more microplastics, but the uptake rate decreases as mussels grow larger. The predominant types of MPs in mussels are fiber and blue in color, with PE and PP being the most common polymers. The distribution of MPs in mussels closely resembles that in water, and there is no significant difference in MPs quantities between P. viridis and P. perna.

Eco-corona formation on the nanomaterials in the aquatic systems lessens their toxic impact: A comprehensive review

Lokeshwari Natarajan et al.

Summary: Recent studies have highlighted the significant impact of nanosized materials, particularly plastics, on aquatic ecosystems, with biofilms playing a crucial role in the existence and implications of these pollutants. The binding of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) forms an eco-corona on these particles, altering their density and surface charge. Understanding the interactions of algal EPS with pollutants and their impact on toxicity is essential for mitigating the environmental effects of these materials.

Roberta Tassinari et al.

Summary: DEHP, an endocrine disrupter, was studied for its juvenile toxicity, revealing liver and metabolic system as main targets in both sexes, with thyroid issues in female rats and reproductive system effects in males. The study concluded that DEHP exposure during peri-pubertal period can induce sex-specific imbalances, utilizing a juvenile animal model for reliable risk assessment targeted towards children.

Lifetime Accumulation of Microplastic in Children and Adults

Nur Hazimah Mohamed Nor et al.

Summary: The study presents a probabilistic lifetime exposure model for microplastics that considers intake through various pathways, simulating concentrations in different parts of the body and validating against empirical data. Results indicate a small contribution of microplastics to overall chemical intake. Future research should focus on exploring the contributions of other food types to microplastic exposure.

Presence of microplastics in drinking water from freshwater sources: the investigation in Changsha, China

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the abundance of microplastics in freshwater, treated water, and household tap water, finding that microplastics in tap water were related to materials of transportation pipelines in the drinking-water supply chain. This study provides evidence for the presence of microplastics in drinking water and may inform strategies for microplastic removal during drinking water treatment.

Microplastics in fresh and processed mussels sampled from fish shops and large retail chains in Italy

L. Nalbone et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of microplastics in three mussel species sourced from various retailers in Italy, finding a significantly higher number of microplastics in fresh mussels. The exposure to microplastics in mussels is limited in its impact on human health, but the sources of microplastics in store-bought mussels may be various and related to contamination along the food production chain. Further studies are needed to properly assess and manage the risk of microplastics in food.

Summary: This review discusses the importance of dynamic protein corona composition in mediating the fate of nanomaterials in the environment, as well as future steps in eco-corona studies. The formation of the biomolecular coating on nanomaterials entering the environment, known as the eco-corona, is still an emerging area of research. Proteins within the eco-corona play a crucial role in defining the biological identity of nanomaterials and their impacts on the environment.
