Summary: In this study, a new form of selenium nanoparticle, LCS-SeNPs, was synthesized and characterized. The results showed that LCS-SeNPs protected against colon injury and inflammation, improved intestinal barrier dysfunction, and alleviated oxidative stress. Moreover, LCS-SeNPs achieved these effects through the regulation of NF-kappa B and Nrf2 signaling pathways.

Biogenic Selenium Nanoparticles Alleviate Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Damage through Regulating Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Mediated Mitophagy

Lei Qiao et al.

Summary: This study found that biogenic selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) can protect the intestinal barrier function through endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and mitophagy. Under oxidative stress conditions, SeNPs can alleviate ER and mitochondrial damage, decrease intracellular Ca2+ and IP3 levels, regulate the expression of related proteins, and effectively reduce the increase in intestinal epithelial permeability.

Biogenic selenium nanoparticles by Lactobacillus casei ATCC 393 alleviate the intestinal permeability, mitochondrial dysfunction and mitophagy induced by oxidative stress

Shuqi Yan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the selenium nanoparticles synthesized by L. casei ATCC 393 effectively alleviated hydrogen peroxide-induced intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction by regulating mTOR/PINK1-mediated mitophagy. The SeNPs had no cytotoxicity on the intestinal epithelial cells and protected against oxidative damage caused by H2O2. Up-regulation of occludin and claudin-1 expression levels, inhibition of m-TOR phosphorylation, and reduction of mitochondria-lysosome fusion were some of the mechanisms involved in the antioxidant activity of SeNPs.
