Exploring phenotypes of deep vein thrombosis in relation to clinical outcomes beyond recurrence

Aaron F. J. Iding et al.

Summary: This study identified 4 distinct phenotypes among patients with DVT, and assessed their relation to various outcomes. Risks were lowest in women using estrogen therapy and highest in patients with a cardiovascular risk profile. These findings have important implications for personalized clinical management.

Redefining clinical venous thromboembolism phenotypes: a novel approach using latent class analysis

Maria A. de Winter et al.

Summary: By categorizing VTE patients without cancer, 5 distinct clinical subtypes were identified, which were associated with anticoagulant treatment and clinical outcomes. This suggests that the heterogeneity of VTE cases extends beyond the distinction between provoked and unprovoked VTE.

Causal effect of renal function on venous thromboembolism: a two-sample Mendelian randomization investigation

Summary: This study used Mendelian randomization to show a causal relationship between decreased renal function and increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The results were consistent across different analyses, supporting the role of impaired renal function in VTE.

Risk factors of pulmonary embolism in the elderly patients: a retrospective study

Yuxia Ma et al.

Summary: This retrospective study analyzed the clinical features and risk factors of 426 patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) admitted to Cangzhou Central Hospital from August 2012 to January 2019. A comparison of clinical features and risk factors was conducted between the elderly group and non-elderly groups. Blood levels of D-dimer, C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interferon-gamma were measured before and after anti-coagulant therapy in two groups.

Protein expression profiling suggests relevance of noncanonical pathways in isolated pulmonary embolism

Vincent Ten Cate et al.

Summary: Patients with isolated pulmonary embolism (PE) have a distinct clinical profile from those with deep vein thrombosis (DVT)-associated PE, with more pulmonary conditions and atherosclerosis. The study identified shared molecular processes between PE phenotypes, as well as an isolated PE-specific protein signature, indicating possible involvement of noncanonical pathways in the acute pathophysiology of isolated PE.
