Evaluation of Coefficients of Mode III Crack-Tip Asymptotic Fields Using Weak Form Quadrature Elements

He Liu et al.

Summary: A weak form quadrature element formulation is established to obtain the coefficients of Mode III crack-tip asymptotic fields. The problem domain is divided into circular subdomains near the crack tips and several integrable normal subdomains elsewhere. The formulation uses displacement expressions and the minimum potential energy principle to establish algebraic equations, from which coefficients of any order can be solved for. Benchmark examples validate the effectiveness of the formulation in evaluating Mode III eigenfunction expansion coefficients.

Weak-Form Quadrature Element Method: A Comparative Review of Different Formulations and Its Comprehensive Assessment

Minmao Liao

Summary: This paper compares and reviews the different formulations of the weak-form quadrature element method (QEM) in the literature, examining the step-by-step procedure of these formulations in detail using a simple one-dimensional bar element. The similarities and differences between the different formulations are summarized after scrutiny. A comprehensive assessment of the QEM is conducted based on a full understanding of the method, comparing several relevant aspects. The paper discusses the strengths, limitations, and future research directions of the QEM, and presents a chronological list of research papers related to the method since 2017, highlighting the state-of-the-art developments and applications.

Determination of asymptotic field coefficients for multi-material antiplane V-notches by the weak form quadrature element method

He Liu et al.

Summary: Weak form quadrature element analysis (QEA) is used to analyze multi-material antiplane V-notches. Angular eigenfunctions are introduced to the inner subdomains with stress singularity, while the outer domain is divided into quadrature elements based on geometric boundary conditions and material properties. Algebraic equations are established and solved to determine the coefficients using the minimum potential energy principle. The study demonstrates the impact of the first eight terms on improving far field stress and displacement estimations. Compared to other methods, QEA of fracture problems requires fewer degrees of freedom for the same level of accuracy, highlighting its advantages.

Weak form quadrature element analysis of crack-tip asymptotic field coefficients

He Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method to compute coefficients of crack-tip asymptotic fields using the weak form quadrature element method. The method requires fewer degrees of freedom compared to the finite element method and the boundary collocation method, while achieving the same accuracy. It demonstrates the advantages of succinctness and directness in fracture analysis.

Determination of asymptotic field coefficients for V-notches by the weak form quadrature element method

He Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the weak form quadrature element method (QEM) is used to determine the asymptotic field coefficients for in-plane V-notch problems. The domain is divided into two parts, and the potential energies are computed separately. Stress and displacement descriptions are introduced in the sector domain around the notch tip. The QEM shows high adaptivity and fast convergence.

New analytic buckling solutions of side-cracked rectangular thin plates by the symplectic superposition method

Zhaoyang Hu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a first attempt to extend an up-to-date symplectic superposition method to linear buckling of side-cracked rectangular thin plates. The problems are introduced into the Hamiltonian system, and a side-cracked plate is then divided into several sub-plates that are analytically solved by the symplectic superposition method. The final analytic solution of a side-cracked plate is obtained by integration of the solutions of the sub-plates, providing a rational approach to exploring more analytic solutions without predetermination of solution forms.
