Calculations of additional axial force and coupling ratio for coupled shear walls

Lingxin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new analytical approach to efficiently calculate the additional axial forces (AAFs) and coupling ratio (CR) in coupled shear wall (CSW) systems. The approach avoids complex numerical simulations or time-consuming analyses. The proposed method is validated through numerical simulations and discussions on the impact of lateral load types and nonlinearities.

Analytical study of stiffened multibay planar coupled shear walls

Rui-Tao Wang et al.

Summary: Placing stiffening coupling beams at some levels of a coupled shear wall structure is an effective way to enhance coupling effects and reduce interstory drifts. Analytical solutions show that the distributions of lateral displacements and rotation components along the structural height depend only on four dimensionless parameters. Parametric studies suggest that the optimal stiffening levels for achieving maximum coupling commonly range from 0.06 to 0.50.

Relations between buckling & vibrational characteristics of coupled shear walls

Genshu Tong et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between buckling and vibrational characteristics of coupled shear wall systems, proposing a simple model to understand the structural behavior. It derives buckling equilibrium differential equations and presents simple equations for determining lateral stiffness, critical loads, and natural frequencies of the systems. Additionally, it develops relations between buckling load factors and vibrational periods to limit the second-order effect in residential buildings.
