Experimental and numerical studies on hysteretic behavior of a novel bending-friction coupled damper

Yujie Lu et al.

Summary: A novel BFCD is proposed for stable energy dissipation and improved stiffness against multi-level earthquakes. Quasi-static tests on one friction damper and five BFCD specimens were conducted to investigate the influences of loading protocols and bending bar configurations. The test results showed clear processes during each loading cycle and the BFCDs with bending bars exhibited higher strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation compared to the conventional damper. Finite element models of BFCDs were established and validated, and numerical analyses confirmed the controllable behavior through reasonable design.

Experimental and numerical study of a brace-type hybrid damper with steel slit plates enhanced by friction mechanism

Ke Ke et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of a novel brace-type hybrid damper enhanced by the friction mechanism. The test results showed multiple yielding stages and dependent hysteretic response curves. The numerical investigation confirmed the energy dissipation mechanism and improvement in energy dissipation capacity and ductility. A theoretical prediction model was also developed to facilitate the practical design of the hybrid damper.

Enhanced design and experimental investigation of disc spring-based self-centering buckling-restrained braces with a compounded combination mode

Peng Chen et al.

Summary: A disc spring-based self-centering energy dissipation brace is proposed, which can provide both damping and recentering capacity to a structure. The friction effect of combined springs is quantified using an incremental energy method and introduced into the existing design method. The experimental results demonstrate that the improved design can accurately estimate the spring friction and the proposed brace exhibits stable and favorable hysteretic response with negligible residual deformations.

Development and Experimental Verification of Self-Centering Haunched Plug-In Modular Connections

Ge Zhang et al.

Summary: An innovative self-centering modular steel structure (SC-MSS) connection is proposed in this research, which adopts a plug-in integration technology to permit efficient construction and reliable structural continuity, and introduces diagonal self-centering (SC) haunch braces installed near the connection core to improve seismic performance, safety, and recoverability. Quasi-static cyclic loading tests were conducted on representative specimens to evaluate the seismic behavior indicators such as hysteretic responses, energy dissipation, residual deformation, and strain features. The results show that the SC haunch braces exhibit excellent self-centering behavior and the SC-MSS connections demonstrate satisfactory bearing capacity, energy dissipation, and self-centering capacity.

Concept and numerical analysis of a double-stage coupling damper for multilevel seismic protection

Kaoshan Dai et al.

Summary: A new double-stage coupling damper (DSCD) is proposed to improve the seismic performance of structures under multilevel earthquakes. The numerical model of the DSCD explores the effects of the ratio between the friction force of the friction component (FC) and the yield force of the buckling restrained component (BRC), as well as the length of slotted holes in the inner plate and the number of FCs. The results show that the energy dissipation capacity and characteristics of the DSCD decrease with increasing ratio and length, and the single-sided FC has higher energy dissipation capacity than the two-sided FCs. A simplified finite element model is developed and validated for structural analysis.

Seismic Behavior of Double Activation Self-Centering Brace and Braced Structures

Hao Jiang et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a double activation self-centering brace (DA-SCB) that improves building resiliency. The DA-SCB first dissipates energy under small displacement excitation and then reactivates, resulting in a higher bearing capacity. Tests and analysis showed that the DA-SCB performs similarly to the regular SCB, but with reduced economic loss and better seismic performance.

Cyclic response of a self-centering RC wall with tension-compression-coupled disc spring devices

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a tension-compression-coupled DSD (TCCDSD) to enhance the bearing capacity of a self-centering shear wall (SCSW) and investigates its performance compared to the traditional SCSW-DSD through numerical models. The parametric analysis shows that adjusting the stiffness of TCCDSD can affect the wall's stiffness and residual drift. Additionally, the design of a steel plate reinforcer (SPR) helps to control damage in the wall.

Effectiveness and robustness of braced-damper systems with adaptive negative stiffness devices in yielding structures

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an adaptive negative stiffness amplifying damper (NSAD) by applying adaptive negative stiffness devices in braced-damper systems. The effectiveness of the proposed NSAD in controlling the inelastic seismic responses of yielding structures is investigated. The results show that the NSAD can effectively control both the acceleration and drift of structures within a certain displacement range and limit the inelastic deformation.

Yujie Lu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel friction strip coupled damper (FSCD) to solve the issues of conventional metallic and friction dampers. Quasi-static tests were conducted to investigate the effect of various factors on the FSCD's behavior. The test results verified the effectiveness of the FSCD and identified the impact of friction force, strip width, and strip number on its performance.

Experimental Study of a New Bar Damper Device for Vibration Control of Structures Subjected to Earthquake Loads

Khaled Ghaedi et al.

Summary: The Bar Damper (BD) is a new yielding damper made of solid bars sandwiched between two plates. Design parameters were formulated based on a simplified mechanical modeling, showing stable hysteretic behavior under cyclic loads and capability of undergoing large displacements without significant strength and stiffness degradation. The slenderness ratio of the bars is a crucial design parameter controlling the effective stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of the dampers, with the strength of the devices estimated from theoretical models consistent with experimental results.

A state-of-the-art review on passive friction dampers and their applications

Sujit Jaisee et al.

Summary: Friction type passive energy dissipation devices, particularly friction dampers, are favored for seismic fortification of engineering structures due to their simplicity, reliability, and ability to dissipate maximum energy without being significantly influenced by loading variables. Since the 1980s, numerous novel passive dry friction dampers have been developed and applied in civil engineering, with a better understanding of friction mechanisms and behaviors. Decades of research on these dampers have been highly scattered throughout the academic community, prompting the need for a systematic overview in this field to facilitate further studies and guide future research directions.
