A new approach to optimize variable axial composite shells: A metaheuristic procedure using the finite element method

Pedro Buhrer Santana et al.

Summary: This paper presents and evaluates a strategy for designing optimum fiber patterns of constant thickness variable-stiffness laminated composite plates and shells. The optimization framework utilizes finite element analysis and the particle swarm optimization algorithm, with a main contribution being the method proposed for parametric description of fiber orientation. Scalar values assigned to control points on the structure are taken as design variables, and these values are interpolated using radial basis functions to define the fiber orientation on the structure's surface. The proposed strategy is applicable to flat and curved structures, ensuring fiber continuity and requiring fewer design variables compared to element-wise fiber angle optimization. The effectiveness of the strategy is demonstrated through optimization of a flat plate, a shallow shell with a hole, and a pressure vessel.

Buckling and post-buckling of variable stiffness plates with cutouts by a single-domain Ritz method

A. Milazzo et al.

Summary: In this work, a single-domain Ritz formulation is proposed and implemented for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling behavior of variable stiffness plates with cutouts. The plate model is based on the first-order shear deformation theory with nonlinear strain-displacement relationships. The method is validated through comparison with literature solutions and demonstrated through various case studies.

Experimental investigation on the buckling and post-buckling behavior of variable stiffness laminates

Yahui Zhang et al.

Summary: Two types of variable stiffness laminates were designed and manufactured based on adequate consideration of process constraints and defect control methods of tow curve placement. A comprehensive experiment was conducted using a 3D digital image correlation system, strain gauges, and displacement meters. The measured results showed significant improvements in the buckling and failure loads of the variable stiffness specimens, with at least 40% and 70% increase, respectively. The FEA results of out-of-plane displacement and strain were consistent with the experimental results, and the higher buckling and failure loads of the variable stiffness specimens were explained by numerical results.

Isogeometric-based mapping modeling and buckling analysis of stiffened panels

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: A new method for modeling and buckling analysis of stiffened panels is proposed in this study, which provides a more efficient and simpler approach. Stiffeners are treated as curves on surfaces during the modeling process, and a new mapped stiffener element based on this mapping modeling is proposed for the buckling analysis process. This method achieves the complete integration of modeling and analysis.

Tanish Dey et al.

Summary: This article explores the instability characteristics of variable stiffness laminated composite shell panels subjected to non-uniform periodic excitations. The results show that the fiber angle orientations, non-uniform distribution of in-plane loadings, and damping have a significant influence on the dynamic instability of VSLC shell panels.

Efficient and accurate semi-analytical simulation of nonlinear behavior of imperfect variable stiffness plates containing rectangular holes

S. A. M. Ghannadpour et al.

Summary: This article investigates the nonlinear and post-buckling behaviors of variable-stiffness plates with and without square and rectangular cutouts, under different boundary conditions. It examines the effects of the presence, size, shape, and location of the cutout on the nonlinear behavior of the plates subjected to uniaxial compressive loads. The study models the plate with cutout by dividing it into sub-plates and connecting them using a plate assembly technique. The results are validated through finite element analysis.

Geometrically nonlinear dynamic analysis of variable stiffness composite laminated and sandwich shell panels

Ankita Gupta et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear free and forced vibration analyses of variable stiffness composite laminated (VSCL) and sandwich shell panels with curvilinear fibers were conducted using a higher-order theory. The structural model considered a third-order shear deformation theory, and geometric nonlinearity was included through von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relations. The results were compared with existing exact and analytical solutions to validate the model.

Geometrically nonlinear bending analysis of variable stiffness composite laminated shell panels with a higher-order theory

Ankita Gupta et al.

Summary: A finite element formulation is developed for linear and nonlinear static analyses of variable stiffness composite laminated shell panels using the third-order shear deformation theory with the Murakami zig-zag function. The accuracy of the formulation is established by comparing the results with existing literature, presenting new results for nonlinear deflection and stresses. The effects of fiber path angles, curvature ratios, number of layers, lamination configurations, and boundary conditions on the nonlinear static behavior of VSCL shells are investigated.

P. M. Anilkumar et al.

Summary: Unsymmetric composite laminates exhibit multiple stable equilibrium shapes due to residual thermal stresses. MFC actuators are used to trigger snap-through, but high voltage input is required. Variable Stiffness laminates offer a larger design space and the ability to reduce actuator size.

An isogeometric framework for the optimal design of variable stiffness shells undergoing large deformations

Francesco S. Liguori et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new optimization tool for shell-type structures, using an isogeometric framework and NURBS interpolation functions to achieve the optimal design of postbuckling response of composite structures. The optimization strategy is divided into two stages, first determining the optimal distribution of lamination parameters and then obtaining the actual distribution of fiber orientation. For both cylindrical panels and composite wingboxes, the optimized postbuckling response shows significant improvements compared to quasi-isotropic baselines.
