Preparation of Nitrocellulose by Homogeneous Esterification of Cellulose Based on Ionic Liquids

Xikai Duan et al.

Summary: A novel method was developed for the preparation of nitrocellulose (NC) with a nitrogen content of 12.62% using [Bmim]Cl (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride) as a catalyst, which only required 15 minutes of reaction time. The samples exhibited a 3D honeycomb structure, uniform distribution of nitrogen elements, and a smaller polydispersity index. Compared with commercially available NC12.6%, the samples showed higher burning rate and better chemical stability.

Effect of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate as the humectant on the thermal decomposition of nitrocellulose

Andong Yu et al.

Summary: Nitrocellulose, a versatile and thermosensitive material, has caused numerous fire and explosion accidents due to its thermal instability during production, transport, storage, and use. Humectants are commonly used to improve the safety of nitrocellulose. This study evaluated the thermal stability of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Bmim][PF6]) and its ability to serve as a humectant for nitrocellulose. Results showed that [Bmim][PF6] exhibited high thermal stability, inhibited the decomposition of nitrocellulose, and absorbed nitrogen dioxide, thereby improving the safety of nitrocellulose.

Thermal Behaviors and Interaction Mechanism of Ammonium Dinitramide with Nitrocellulose

Qiong Wang et al.

Summary: The thermal behaviors of nano-scale composite energetic materials composed of ADN and NC were studied using various instruments. The results showed that the interaction mechanism between ADN and NC is crucial for the design and safety of these materials. The mixture of NC and ADN exhibited different thermal decomposition characteristics compared to NC or ADN alone. ADN initiated the interaction with NC, leading to the formation of oxidative gases. The thermal decomposition process of ADN dominated the initial stage of the mixture, followed by the oxidation of NC and the cation of ADN.

The effect of citrate plasticizers on the properties of nitrocellulose granules

Katarzyna Ganczyk-Specjalska et al.

Summary: Nitrocellulose granules containing eco-friendly inert plasticizers, alternatives to phthalate derivatives, were successfully obtained. Single-base propellants were obtained using a safe granulation process, and diethylene glycol dinitrate (DEGDN) was used as an energetic modifier. The addition of citrate plasticizers reduced the heat of combustion and dynamic vivacity, while DEGDN increased the heat of combustion. The presence of DEGDN in the granules reduced the activation energy and increased the constant heat cumulative rate. The prepared propellants exhibited excellent thermal stability and can potentially be used in small-caliber ammunition.

Effect of chemical composition and cell structure on water vapor sorption behavior of parenchyma cells and fiber cells in moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis)

Xin Wei et al.

Summary: Efficient water sorption in bamboo and its relationship with cell structure and chemical composition were investigated in this study. The results showed that parenchyma cells (PCs) had higher equilibrium moisture content (EMC) compared to fiber cells (FCs), with a contribution ratio of 12:9. The hygroscopic mechanism of PCs was related to their high hemicellulose content and unique cell structure. Heat treatment resulted in a greater reduction in hygroscopicity of PCs due to the degradation of hemicellulose and lignin and the higher cellulose crystallinity. This research improves our understanding of the structure-composition-function relationship in bamboo and provides scientific support for further applications.
