Master-Key Regulators of Sex Determination in Fish and Other Vertebrates-A Review

Arie Yehuda Curzon et al.

Summary: In vertebrates, a single gene with an allele ratio of 1:1 plays a crucial role in sex-determination. These genes, known as master-key regulators (MKRs), are often associated with DNA structural variations. The knowledge about MKRs mostly comes from fish, especially cichlids. This study lists 14 MKRs and explores the common network driving sex-determination.

Construction of a high-density genetic linkage map and fine mapping of QTLs for growth and sex-related traits in red-tail catfish (Hemibagrus wyckioides)

Yu-Lin Zhou et al.

Summary: A high-density genetic linkage map of red-tail catfish was constructed using 2b-RAD sequencing technology, identifying QTLs and growth-related genes. Additionally, a sex-related QTL on LG20 and potential sex dimorphic genes were detected, providing important insights for future genetic studies and sex control breeding.

Genome-wide SNP analysis suggests male heterogamety in bighead catfish (Clarias macrocephalus, Gunther, 1864)

Dung Ho My Nguyen et al.

Summary: Bighead catfish is an important aquacultural species in Southeast Asia, where crossbreeding with male African catfish produces hybrids with vigorous traits but face sterility issues. The study suggests that bighead catfish likely have a male heterogametic XX/XY sex-determination system with multiple male-linked loci, providing new insights into sex-determination mechanisms in clariid catfish for genetic improvements in breeding programs.

An Investigation of ZZ/ZW and XX/XY Sex Determination Systems in North African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus, Burchell, 1822)

Dung Ho My Nguyen et al.

Summary: Investigating sex-specific loci in North African catfish species revealed the co-existence of XX/XY and ZZ/ZW sex determination systems, providing insights for commercial breeding purposes. High-throughput genome complexity reduction sequencing effectively identified moderately sex-linked loci in C. gariepinus, showing potential for further genetic improvements in breeding programs.

Sexual Development and the Environment: Conclusions from 40 Years of Theory

Lisa E. Schwanz et al.

Summary: The review highlights the insights gained from theoretical examination of environmental sex determination and thermolability in understanding the dynamics associated with different modes of sex determination and the influence of temperature on fitness. It emphasizes the importance of differential fitness in selection for ESD, while also discussing the potential for biased sex ratios and how frequency-dependent selection acts on ESD-related traits. Theoretical models reveal similarities between different sex-determining systems and suggest that evolutionary transitions between genotypic sex determination and temperature-dependent sex determination are elegant and simple. Incorporating mechanism into ecology and evolution models can provide a more holistic understanding of these complex processes.
