Dynamic Mode II Fracture Toughness of Rocks Subjected to Various In Situ Stress Conditions

Wei Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, the PTS and SCC methods were used to measure the dynamic K-IIC of rocks subjected to different preload levels, and the dynamic K-IIC of rocks under various confining pressures was obtained using the SCC method and finite element analysis. The results reveal that the dynamic K-IIC of rocks increases with the confining pressure and loading rate, but decreases with the preload. Furthermore, the dynamic K-IIC derived from the PTS method differs significantly from that obtained from the SCC method, and an empirical formula is proposed to predict and establish the relationship between the dynamic K-IIC measured from the PTS and SCC specimens.

Experimental investigation on the influence of a single structural plane on rockburst

Tai Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of a rigid structural plane on rockburst by designing four different types of block specimens and conducting biaxial compression tests. The results show that a prefabricated unfilled crack reduces the initial damage stress and overall strength of the specimen, leading to an earlier occurrence of rockburst but a decrease in initial intensity. Compared to an exposed crack, a non-exposed crack facilitates rockburst more. Based on experimental observations, four different rockburst evolution modes are summarized to help understand rockburst in practical tunnels, and engineering measures are recommended for control and prevention.

Dynamic Characteristics of Coal under Triaxial Constraints Based on the Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar Test System

Zhoujie Gu et al.

Summary: Dynamic failure experiments were conducted on coal samples under dynamic load in a triaxial Split-Hopkinson pressure bar test system to study the dynamic characteristics of coal in a multi-axial pre-stress state. The experiments showed that the 3D pre-stress state significantly affects the dynamic failure of coal. The dynamic initial stress of coal increases linearly with strain, then grows at a reduced rate until the peak strength, and the mechanical curve rebounds notably. The dynamic strength factors of coal vary significantly with the increase of confining pressure.

Summary: This paper investigates the 3D crack growth under dynamic compression through a series of tests on cubic glass specimens. The results show that the dynamic compressive strength of the specimen is influenced by the inclination direction of the 3D pre-crack. Theoretical analysis reveals the mechanism behind crack initiation and favorable direction, considering factors such as non-singular T stress and friction between crack planes.

Effect of water saturation on dynamic behavior of sandstone after wetting-drying cycles

Hongru Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the influence of water on the mechanical properties of rock materials is crucial for safe design and evaluation in rock engineering. This study investigated the effects of different wetting-drying cycles on sandstone's dynamic behavior, focusing on the changes in porosity, dynamic strength, and energy dissipation. The results showed that as the number of cycles increased, the porosity of the sandstone increased, while the dynamic strength and total energy dissipation decreased. Additionally, the impact of water saturation on dynamic strength changed from enhancement to weakening with increasing porosity.

Strain rate effect on mixed mode I/II fracture toughness of sandstone and its micromechanism

Peiwang Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rate dependent behavior of mixed mode I/II fracture toughness in rock. Split Hopkinson pressure bar tests were performed on cracked sandstone specimens with different loading angles and strain rates. The results show that the peak load and peak strain increase with increasing strain rates while the influence of loading angle is almost negligible. Dynamic mode I and mode II stress intensity factors as well as effective fracture toughness increase rapidly with increasing strain rate before reaching a plateau. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the rate effect of mixed mode I/II fracture and its micromechanism.

Control Effect of Negative Poisson's Ratio (NPR) Cable on Impact-Induced Rockburst with Different Strain Rates: An Experimental Investigation

Jie Hu et al.

Summary: Impact-induced rockburst hazards pose a severe threat to the construction safety of deep-buried, high-stress tunnels. This paper investigates the control effect of Negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) cable on impact-induced rockburst. Through indoor simulation experiments, it is found that the support of NPR cables enhances energy dissipation, rock fragmentation, and the strength of the rock. Importantly, NPR support significantly minimizes the rockburst intensity by slowing down the energy release rate during rock failure. The research results provide valuable guidance for the engineering practice of rockburst control.

Effects of pre-static loads on the dynamic pure mode I and mixed mode I-II fracture characteristics of rocks

Youzhen Li et al.

Summary: Rocks in deep underground engineering are subjected to both pre-static loads and dynamic disturbances, leading to fractures in mode I and mixed mode I-II. This study performs fracture tests on granite specimens in coupled static-dynamic mode I and mixed mode I-II using the improved split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) loading system. The effects of pre-static loads on dynamic fracture characteristics of granite are comprehensively investigated through various techniques. The experimental results reveal that both dynamic and total fracture toughness exhibit rate dependence, with dynamic fracture toughness decreasing and total fracture toughness barely changing as pre-static loads increase.

Fracture toughness weakening effect of high static pre-loaded CSTBD granite subjected to low frequency dynamic disturbance during the rock fracture

Wuxing Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fracture mechanisms of highly pre-loaded rock with cracks subjected to low-frequency dynamic disturbances. Experimental tests reveal that the fracture toughness of the pre-loaded rock is lower under dynamic disturbances compared to static loads. The degree of fracture toughness weakening is dependent on the pre-load level, with higher pre-loads resulting in more significant decreases in fracture toughness with disturbance frequency.

A unified strain-hardening and strain-softening elastoplastic constitutive model for intact rocks

Yingming Xiao et al.

Summary: A unified elastoplastic constitutive model, called UHS, has been developed to capture the nonlinearity of intact rocks. This model incorporates three new developments, including a unified strain-hardening and strain-softening rule, a cohesion loss model, and normalized plastic shear strain. Validation results show that the proposed model can accurately capture the nonlinearity of the stress-strain curve and the effects of confining pressure on the rock strength and behavior.

Effects of axial pre-force and loading rate on Mode I fracture behavior of granite

Zhenyu Han et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of axial pre-force and loading rate on the dynamic fracture behavior of rocks through coupled static-dynamic tests. The results show that both pre-force and loading rate have an impact on fracture parameters, with loading rate having a more significant effect. A new method based on the DIC technique is proposed to calculate crack opening distance (COD) and crack propagation velocity (CPV), improving efficiency and accuracy compared to traditional methods. The findings provide important insights into rock fracture dynamics and crack propagation.

Influence of Bedding Planes on Mode I and Mixed-Mode (I-II) Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Coal: Analysis of Experiments

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: Bedding planes significantly influence the effective dynamic fracture toughness and crack propagation characteristics of coal, with decreasing DFT and crack propagation velocity as the bedding-plane angles increase. The crack initiation direction is affected by bedding planes, and the crack propagation path is jointly determined by the direction of maximum principal stress and bedding planes. In pure mode I, crack propagation velocities increase with the increase of bedding-plane angles, while in mixed-mode I-II, the largest velocity occurs at a bedding-plane angle of 45 degrees, with loading velocities peaking at this angle before decreasing rapidly.

Micromechanisms of coal fracture: Insights from quantitative AE technique

Xiaoran Wang et al.

Summary: The experimental study on microcracks in hard coal beams using AE technique revealed various mechanisms of microcracks, with localized shear and tensile displacements and predominantly mode-I opening microcracks in the global coordinate system. The orientation of microcrack planes was found to be mostly vertical, with a majority of AE sources having angle less than 30 degrees with the horizontal direction. The study also showed energy dissipation mainly above the crack tip during coal fracture, with AE magnitudes following the Gutenberg-Richter relation.
