Numerical prediction of fatigue crack growth based on cumulative plastic strain versus experimental results for AA6082-T6

D. M. Neto et al.

Summary: This study predicts fatigue crack growth using the finite element method, and compares the numerical predictions with experimental measurements on MT specimens made of 6082-T6 aluminium. The results indicate that cyclic plastic deformation is the main damage mechanism governing fatigue crack growth, but the accuracy of the numerical solutions needs improvement.

On the experimental characterisation of crack tip displacement fields on nonplanar elements: Numerical and experimental analysis

A. Camacho-Reyes et al.

Summary: This study combines a novel differential geometry approach, 3D-DIC, and FEA results to characterize crack tip fields on curve-cracked elements. It aims to validate and compare aspects that cannot be addressed using 3D-DIC and provides a comprehensive comparison between experimental and numerical fields using an Image Decomposition technique.

Effect of crack flank holes on fatigue crack growth

D. M. Neto et al.

Summary: The effect of drilling two symmetric holes along the crack flanks on the fatigue crack growth (FCG) rate was evaluated numerically. The FCG rate increases (decreases) when the crack tip is behind (ahead) the holes. This behavior is amplified by increasing the diameter of the holes and reducing the distance between them. Experimental work validated the numerical model, indicating that cumulative plastic strain at the crack tip is a suitable crack driving force and cyclic plastic deformation is the main damage mechanism of FCG.

Effect of load blocks on fatigue crack growth

D. M. Neto et al.

Summary: This research uses a numerical approach to study fatigue crack growth in different load sequences and materials. The results confirm that cyclic plastic deformation is the main damage mechanism and crack closure can explain different crack behaviors. The lack of material hardening significantly affects the crack tip behavior.

New algorithm for optimised fitting of DIC data to crack tip plastic zone using the CJP model

Bing Yang et al.

Summary: This work provides guidance on how to optimally determine the appropriate fitting region in digital image correlation (DIC) when fitting a crack tip field model, comparing the accuracy of the Williams and CJP models in describing the crack tip plastic zone. The study shows that the CJP model is more accurate and that there is a strong linear relationship between the stress-intensity factor KF and the plastic zone area, indicating KF as a direct driving force for crack growth.
