An integrated approach to explore the monophyletic status of the cosmopolitan genus Hexabathynella (Crustacea, Bathynellacea, Parabathynellidae): two new species from Rottnest Island (Wadjemup), Western Australia

Giulia Perina et al.

Summary: The Hexabathynella genus is the only genus of the family Parabathynellidae that has a worldwide distribution. Currently, there are 23 species described from five continents. In this study, two new species were described, expanding the knowledge of the subterranean aquatic community at Rottnest Island, and a phylogeny was used to test the monophyletic status of the genus.

Split distribution, biogeography and morphological and genetic diversity of the Iberobathynellini Tribe in the family Parabathynellidae (Crustacea, Malacostraca, Bathynellacea)

Ana Isabel Camacho et al.

Summary: This article presents a modern systematic revision of the Iberobathynella group, providing information on its phylogenetic, biogeographic, and evolutionary aspects. The study reveals that molecular and morphological divergences are not always congruent, and invalidates the use of subtribe and subgenus categories. Molecular dating supports the early divergence of the Iberobathynellini tribe and the role of plate tectonics in shaping its amphi-Atlantic distribution. The existence of at least three cryptic species is confirmed.

Cryptic diversity down under: defining species in the subterranean amphipod genus Nedsia Barnard & Williams, 1995 (Hadzioidea: Eriopisidae) from the Pilbara, Western Australia

Rachael A. King et al.

Summary: Amphipod crustaceans in Australian groundwater ecosystems, especially in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, are important but enigmatic. Taxonomic treatments based on morphology alone have led to poor definition and uncertain distribution of amphipod species in the genus Nedsia. This study presents a systematic revision of Nedsia using both molecular and morphological analyses, resulting in the description of 13 new species, confirmation of three existing species, and synonymization of eight previously described species. The research highlights the functional morphological crypticity of Nedsia species and provides a streamlined pathway for future taxonomic work. It also lays the foundation for environmental impact assessments and ongoing monitoring of groundwater communities in the resource-rich Pilbara region.
