Enhanced reliability with bimodal microstructure and transformation-induced toughening in Al2O3-YSZ based thermal barrier coatings

Shiven Ponnapureddy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of a bimodal microstructure consisting of nanometer-sized Al2O3, micrometer-sized Al2O3, 3YSZ, and CNT as a thermal barrier coating. The coating, deposited onto an Inconel 718 substrate, shows improved density and crack resistance compared to conventional Al2O3 coatings.

CMAS plus sea salt corrosion to thermal barrier coatings

Lei Guo et al.

Summary: In the marine environment, the coexistence of sea salt and CMAS poses a significant threat to the safety of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). This study investigated the corrosion behavior of synthetic sea salt and CMAS towards TBCs. Sea salt altered the structure of CMAS, reducing its melting temperature and high-temperature viscosity. At 1200 degrees C, CMAS + sea salt completely melted while CMAS did not; at 1250 degrees C, both melted, but CMAS + sea salt exhibited a stronger penetration ability in TBCs compared to CMAS. Therefore, TBCs that have not been affected by CMAS or are less affected may still be damaged by CMAS + sea salt attack.

Al-modification for PS-PVD 7YSZ TBCs to improve particle erosion and thermal cycle performances

Xiaofeng Zhang et al.

Summary: Plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD) is a novel process for preparing feather-like columnar thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) with good strain tolerance and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) deposition, which shows great potential in the field of aero-engines. However, particle erosion is a weakness for PS-PVD 7YSZ TBCs due to the harsh service environment. To address this issue, an Al-modification approach is proposed, which forms an alpha-Al2O3 overlay on the surface of 7YSZ columnar coating through in-situ reaction of Al and ZrO2. The results demonstrate that this approach can improve particle erosion resistance and has better thermal cycle performance compared to the as-sprayed TBCs.

Oxidation behavior of high Hf nickel-based superalloy in air at 900, 1000 and 1100°C

Jiu-han Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the oxidation behavior of a nickel-based superalloy with high hafnium content through isothermal oxidation tests at different temperatures. The results showed that the alloy exhibited excellent oxidation resistance, with the formation of HfO2 particles at higher temperatures interacting with Al2O3. The mechanisms of HfO2 formation and its impact on oxidation resistance were analyzed based on the results of the oxidation tests at different temperatures.

Thermal cycling behavior of EB-PVD rare earth oxides co-doping ZrO2-based thermal barrier coatings

Zhen Zhen et al.

Summary: A novel ceramic topcoat of Gd2O3-Yb2O3-Y2O3 co-stabilized ZrO2 (GYbYSZ) thermal barrier coatings was fabricated using electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) technique. The study systematically investigated the phase stability, composition, morphology, and cyclic oxidation of the coating. The results showed that the ceramic coat maintained its cubic phase structure after long-term annealing and exhibited a multi-layer structure with layer-by-layer spallation after thermal cycling.

Lifetime improvement of EB-PVD 7YSZ TBCs by doping of Hf or Zr in NiCoCrAlY bond coats

Andrea Ebach-Stahl et al.

Summary: Rare earth elements have a positive influence on the oxidation behavior and lifetime of TBC systems. Doping with Hf and Zr in the range of 0.15-0.6 at.% Hf achieves over 3000 cycles, while Zr doping at 0.3 at.% provides a high lifetime of about 2800 cycles. Microstructural changes, including rare earth precipitates, were examined in detail.

A study on the mechanical and thermal shock properties of MCrAlY coating prepared by arc ion plating

Shiming Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, MCrAlY coatings with different microstructures were prepared by arc ion plating to investigate their mechanical and thermal shock properties. The results indicate that the microstructure of the coating significantly impacts its thermal shock properties. A columnar structure exhibited poor thermal shock resistance, while a dense and laminar structure was found to be ideal. Increasing bias voltage during coating preparation can achieve the desired structure but may reduce oxidation resistance.
