Increasing the Hardness and Corrosion Resistance of the Surface of CP-Ti by Plasma Electrolytic Nitrocarburising and Polishing

Sergei Kusmanov et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the possibility of increasing the hardness to 1420 HV and the corrosion resistance of the CP-Ti surface through a combined plasma electrolytic treatment. The treatment involves anodic plasma electrolytic nitrocarburising in a solution of ammonia, acetone, and ammonium chloride at 900 degrees C, followed by plasma electrolytic polishing. The research focuses on the morphology, surface roughness, phase composition, structure, microhardness, and corrosion characteristics of the modified layer. Results show that an increase in surface roughness negatively affects the corrosion resistance, and plasma electrolytic polishing can effectively remove the outer porous oxide layer for improved corrosion resistance. The best reduction in corrosion current density is achieved after plasma electrolytic polishing in a solution of ammonium fluoride (4%) at 300 V for 3 minutes, with a decrease of 13 times compared to CP-Ti and two orders compared to a plasma electrolytic nitrocarburising sample.

Characteristics and function of vapour gaseous envelope fluctuation in plasma electrolytic polishing

Chuanqiang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution process and function mechanism of the vapour gaseous envelope (VGE) with voltage change in plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP). The results indicate that the fluctuation of VGE is the key to the effect of PEP, as it enables electrolyte to constantly contact and separate from the workpiece surface, leading to electrochemical reactions and plasma discharge for polishing.

Role of polymorph microstructure of Ti6Al4V alloy on PEO coating formation in phosphate electrolyte

Ting Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation behavior of PEO coatings on Ti6Al4V alloy with different lattice structures revealing the influence of Ti phases on coating morphology and composition. Higher current density promotes coating growth and reduces surface roughness. The final coatings primarily consist of anatase, rutile, and an amorphous phase containing phosphorous.

Evolution of model roughness on quasi-pure aluminum during plasma electrolytic polishing

A. Spica et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the material removal evolution during Plasma Electrolytic Polishing on 1050 aluminum alloy, highlighting the significance of applied voltage on aluminum removal. Results show that high voltage leads to high quality polishing and rapid elimination of rolling streaks. Significant reduction in roughness can be achieved in just a few minutes of processing, with valleys not undergoing material removal as long as peak to valley height remains high enough.

Summary: This study investigates the near-surface layer microstructure in Ti-6Al-4V alloy samples subjected to plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP) and subsequent high-energy ion implantation with nitrogen (II). Despite the substrate structure, an enhanced microhardness effect was observed, exceeding the penetration depth of the implanted ions.
