Enhanced strength without sacrificing ductility in FeCrMnVSiX high entropy alloys via controlling the ratio of metallic to covalent bonding

Yanyan Liu et al.

Summary: It has been a goal in materials science to enhance strength without sacrificing ductility. By introducing semi-metallic Si into the FeCrMnV high-entropy alloy (HEA) to control metallic and covalent bonding, a FeCrMnVSiX HEAs with high strength and favorable ductility was obtained. Theoretical calculations supported the presence of covalent bonding in the FeCrMnVSiX HEA, which was confirmed experimentally through nanoindentation, Vickers microhardness, and tensile tests. The Si-containing HEA coatings exhibited excellent tribological properties, and the enhanced strength without sacrificing ductility was attributed to the combination of metallic and covalent bonding.

Effect of Si addition to improve the performance of type II and type I hot corrosion resistance of aluminide coating

Haojun Yu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the microstructure and hot corrosion resistance of four aluminide coatings with different silicon (Si) contents ranging from 0% to 30%. It was found that Si primarily exists as CrSi2 and (Cr,Ti)5Si3 in the upper zone of Si-modified aluminide coatings, and CrSi2 transforms into Cr3Si phase during the corrosion process. These silicides hinder the inward diffusion of corrosive elements, resulting in enhanced corrosion resistance at 700 degrees C. Mechanisms of severe corrosion in coatings with Si at 900 degrees C were also revealed, including insufficient Al to renovate Al2O3 scale due to high Si content, and fast depletion of Al at high temperature.

Effect of Si addition on microstructures and oxidation behavior of CoCrW alloy prepared by spark plasma sintering

Kaili Song et al.

Summary: Three Stellite alloys with different Si contents (CCW, CCW-3Si and CCW-5Si) were prepared via spark plasma sintering. Their oxidation behavior at 800 degrees C was studied. After 200 h oxidation, oxide scale composition and growth mechanism were analyzed, and it was found that the Si content in the alloy significantly influenced the formation of SiO2 at the alloy/scale interface, leading to improved oxidation resistance.

Corrosion behaviour of Fe-25Cr alloy in wet CO2 gas at 650 °C: Effects of chloride deposits and Si plus Mn alloying addition

Yuchen Cai et al.

Summary: In a high temperature environment with a gas mixture, the oxide growth and carburization of ferritic Fe-25wt% Cr alloy are affected. The presence of NaCl-KCl deposits leads to a more porous oxide scale and extensive carburization. Alloy additions of Si+Mn provide improved protection, but this protection is greatly reduced in the presence of salt.

Kai Chen et al.

Summary: The effect of surface finishing on the oxidation behavior of a Fe-21Cr-32Ni alloy in supercritical carbon dioxide was studied. Grinding the surface reduced oxidation and carburization rates, leading to the formation of a thin/protective Cr-rich oxide layer and improving oxidation and carburization resistance.

Test atmospheres affecting voids distribution on MCrAlY-bond coats for TBCs at 1050 °C

Chao Li et al.

Summary: The oxidation behavior of thermal barrier coatings with a NiCoCrAlY bond coat at 1050 degrees C in different atmospheres was studied. It was found that water vapor contributes to fewer defects and lesser internal growth of Al2O3, and excess water vapor in the air + water vapor atmosphere suppresses local inward oxide growth. Water vapor also affects the grain growth of alumina.

A study on the mechanical and thermal shock properties of MCrAlY coating prepared by arc ion plating

Shiming Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, MCrAlY coatings with different microstructures were prepared by arc ion plating to investigate their mechanical and thermal shock properties. The results indicate that the microstructure of the coating significantly impacts its thermal shock properties. A columnar structure exhibited poor thermal shock resistance, while a dense and laminar structure was found to be ideal. Increasing bias voltage during coating preparation can achieve the desired structure but may reduce oxidation resistance.
