Psychological growth following exposure to isolated, confined, and extreme environments: A systematic review

Patrick M. Nicoll et al.

Summary: The primary aim of this systematic review was to explore potential contributors to post-expedition psychological Growth (PEG) following prolonged exposure to isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments. The most predictive factors of PEG were perceived stress, agreeableness, and openness to experience. However, further research is needed to understand why and how these changes occur.

Dynamics of stress and recovery and relationships with perceived environmental mastery in extreme environments

Michel Nicolas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of stress and recovery responses and their relationships with perceived environmental mastery during a one-year polar winter-over expedition. The findings revealed that the stress and recovery responses experienced by the winterers varied depending on the severity of the environment. Perceived environmental mastery played a significant role in shaping the dynamics of these responses.

A systematic review of resilient performance in defence and security settings

Marc Vincent Jones et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic literature review to explore resilient performance in defence and security settings. The findings indicated that mental toughness, confidence, and a stress-is-enhancing mindset were positively associated with performance outcomes. There was mixed evidence for the predictive value of biomarkers. Interventions to improve resilient performance focused on mindfulness and general psychological skills, with clearer effects observed on cognitive tasks.

The examination of mental toughness, sleep, mood and injury rates in an Arctic ultra-marathon

Scott Murray Graham et al.

Summary: Research on the physiological and psychological effects of ultra-endurance racing in extreme conditions is scarce. This study identified injury patterns, mood states, and sleep patterns in athletes during a 120 mile Arctic ultra-marathon. Mental toughness showed a moderate negative correlation with depression, anger, and confusion during the race. Success in such events requires significant psychological and physiological preparation to minimize the effects of sleep deprivation and injuries.

The Emergence of Resilience: Recovery Trajectories in Sleep Functioning After a Major Stressor

Daniel F. Gucciardi et al.

Summary: The study proposed an alternative approach to measuring emergent resilience by looking at within-person variability in sleep duration over time. Results showed a small but meaningful decrease in within-person variability each night during the 7-day monitoring period, indicating a bounce-back effect. Additionally, the study found that biological stress mainly influenced total sleep duration on the first night, while adaptability had a larger impact on temporal changes in within-person variability.

Psychosocial issues in isolated and confined extreme environments

Lawrence A. Palinkas et al.

Summary: Psychosocial factors significantly impact behavior and performance in long duration space missions, including individual sensitivity, team decrements, interpersonal relationships, and organizational culture. Therefore, improved screening and selection, leadership, coping and interpersonal skills training, and organizational change are key elements to optimizing adjustment to the environment and preventing decrements during and after long duration missions.
