Visual Inference and Graphical Representation in Regression Discontinuity Designs*

Christina Korting et al.

Summary: Despite the widespread use of graphs, little is known about readers' ability to process statistical information. This study focuses on visual inference in regression discontinuity designs and finds that bin widths and fit lines have the largest effects on participants' perception of discontinuities. The study suggests using small bins with no fit lines as a starting point for constructing RD graphs and shows that visual inference complements econometric inference with similar or lower false positive rates.

Testing identifying assumptions in fuzzy regression discontinuity designs

Yoichi Arai et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new specification test for assessing the validity of fuzzy regression discontinuity designs. The test focuses on the joint distribution of observed outcomes and treatment status, which differs from existing approaches. The results show that the proposed test has appealing statistical properties and is applied to evaluate the validity of two FRD designs.

Coverage error optimal confidence intervals for local polynomial regression

Sebastian Calonico et al.

Summary: This paper studies the higher-order inference properties of nonparametric local polynomial regression methods under random sampling. The authors prove expansions for t statistics and coverage error expansions for interval estimators, which hold uniformly and cover estimation of derivatives. They demonstrate that robust bias corrected confidence intervals have the fastest coverage error decay rates in all cases and provide novel bandwidth selectors.

A Correction for Regression Discontinuity Designs With Group-Specific Mismeasurement of the Running Variable

Otavio Bartalotti et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel measurement error correction procedure that addresses heterogeneous mismeasurement structures by utilizing auxiliary information. Adjusted asymptotic variance, standard errors, and honest confidence intervals are provided, with simulations showing that the proposed procedure corrects bias introduced by heterogeneous measurement error and achieves empirical coverage closer to nominal test size. Two empirical illustrations demonstrate the potential of correcting for measurement error to reinforce study results or provide new perspectives on data.

Extrapolating Treatment Effects in Multi-Cutoff Regression Discontinuity Designs

Matias D. Cattaneo et al.

Summary: The regression discontinuity (RD) design is a credible identification strategy for program evaluation and causal inference in nonexperimental settings. However, RD treatment effect estimands are local, so developing statistical methods for extrapolation of these effects is key. A new design-based method relying on the presence of multiple cutoffs is introduced, with an easy-to-interpret identifying assumption mimicking common trends. Illustration with data on a subsidized loan program in Colombia offers new evidence on program effects for students away from the eligibility cutoff.

Summary: Regression discontinuity designs have been widely applied in health research and could be used more widely still. However, shortcomings in study quality and reporting suggest that the potential benefits of this method have not yet been fully realized.
