Analysis of heavy metals content in commercially available kratom products in Richmond, Virginia

James H. Fleming et al.

Summary: Kratom is a psychoactive substance derived from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. Its popularity has increased in recent years due to its opioid-like effects. However, concerns about the heavy metal content in kratom products for safe consumption are not well-documented. In a study conducted in Richmond, Virginia, kratom samples were found to have excessive amounts of manganese, which can lead to manganism and its associated symptoms. Stricter regulations are necessary to address this public health concern.

Mapping the distribution of mercury (II) chloride in zebrafish organs by benchtop micro-energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence: A proof of concept

Roberta G. Leita et al.

Summary: This study mapped the distribution of Hg and other trace elements in zebrafish exposed to mercury (II) chloride to assess toxicity and bioaccumulation. The results showed bioaccumulation of Hg in fish organs, particularly in the gills, and the accumulation process was dose-dependent. Additionally, exposure to mercury(II) chloride did not alter levels of other trace elements in fish tissues.

Multielement determination (essential and potentially toxic elements) in eye shadows exposed to consumption in Brazil using ICP OES

Cinira Mello Santana et al.

Summary: Cosmetics, especially eye shadows, are widely consumed worldwide and have a significant impact on the economy. This study analyzed the multielement composition of eye shadows sold in the Brazilian market, finding that many elements exceeded the recommended maximum tolerable limits, posing potential risks to human health and the environment.

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in traditional Chinese medicine materials (TCMMs): A critical review

Tingting Yao et al.

Summary: In the context of serious environmental pollution, the potential harm caused by toxic heavy metals in traditional Chinese medicine materials (TCMMs) has seriously affected the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine. This study found that a portion of TCMM samples exceeded the domestic standards for cadmium (Cd) content, and the decrease in soil acidity and improvement of Cd-hyperaccumulator cultivation conditions are crucial for ensuring the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine.

Analysis of Minerals and Toxic Elements in Commonly Consumed Herbal Medicines in Zahedan, Iran, and Associated Human Health Risk Assessment

Mohammad Hossein Habibollahi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accumulation of toxic elements and the potential human health risks associated with high consumption of herbal medicines in Zahedan, Iran. The results showed that all samples contained detectable concentrations of target elements, but the mean concentrations of each element in all herbal medicines were significantly lower than the legal limit. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) for each metal, as well as the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) and total carcinogenic risk (TCR), were all lower than the acceptable limit.

Analytical control of Mn and Se in synthesized compounds, promising plant-derived medicines, by WDXRF and TXRF methods

Elena V. Chuparina et al.

Summary: Some organic compounds extracted from plants are used as raw materials in the synthesis of new drugs. Ensuring the quality of future medicinal products requires quantification of the metal or semimetal bound to the organic molecule and control of foreign elements. This research applied X-ray fluorescence methods to quantify these elements and found no significant difference between the results obtained from two different methods.

Simultaneous Determination of Residual Palladium and Thiol Homogeneous Scavenger N-Acetylcysteine in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Using Inductive Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry

Ahmed Elmekawy

Summary: In order to comply with regulations on residual metal levels in pharmaceutical products, the pharmaceutical industry uses metal scavengers with high selectivity and effective removal capabilities. Thiol homogeneous scavengers are particularly effective in eliminating palladium, but detecting residual thiol homogeneous scavengers is currently problematic. A method using ICP-MS for simultaneous detection of N-acetylcysteine and palladium has been successfully validated.
