Coal-Based Activated Carbon via Microwave-Assisted ZnCl2 Activation for Methyl Violet 2B Dye Removal: Optimization, Desirability Function, and Adsorption Mechanism

Salis A. Musa et al.

Summary: Activated carbon (MCAC) was successfully produced from Malaysian coal (MC) through microwave radiation assisted ZnCl2 activation. The MCAC exhibited a large surface area (798.18 m(2)/g) and a mesoporous structure (average pore diameter of 3.67 nm). The adsorption properties of MCAC were evaluated using Methylene Violet (MV 2B) as a model dye, and the results showed that the adsorption followed the Freundlich and pseudo-second order models. The study highlights the potential of MCAC as an effective adsorbent for pollutant removal.

High-Surface-Area-Activated Carbon Derived from Mango Peels and Seeds Wastes via Microwave-Induced ZnCl2 Activation for Adsorption of Methylene Blue Dye Molecules: Statistical Optimization and Mechanism

Nur Shakinah Razali et al.

Summary: In this study, high-surface-area-activated carbon (MSMPAC) was synthesized using Mango (Mangifera indica) seeds and peels mixed fruit wastes as a renewable precursor and microwave-induced ZnCl2 activation. The performance of MSMPAC in removing cationic dye (methylene blue, MB) from water was evaluated. The key adsorption factors (MSMPAC dose, pH, and time) were investigated using the Box-Behnken design. Langmuir model was found to fit the adsorption isotherm data well, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 232.8 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics followed both pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. MB adsorption on MSMPAC surface was spontaneous and endothermic. The mechanisms of MB adsorption included electrostatic forces, pore filling, pi-pi stacking, and H-bonding.
