Breeding crops for drought-affected environments and improved climate resilience

Mark Cooper et al.

Summary: We reviewed different breeding methods for enhancing drought resistance in crops. Breeding climate-resilient crops with improved abiotic and biotic stress resistance is both an opportunity and a challenge in response to climate change. By utilizing the breeder's equation framework, we analyzed methods and strategies that have been successful in breeding crops with improved drought resistance in environments that are a mix of drought-affected and favorable conditions. Integration of traits information across different scales is crucial for accurately predicting crop yield outcomes within current and future environments. This will require interdisciplinary teams to explore and exploit innovative opportunities to speed up breeding program outcomes, including improved germplasm resources and cultivars suitable for specific local environments.

Effect of Soil Moisture Deficit on Aerobic Rice in Temperate Australia

Matthew Champness et al.

Summary: Declining water availability is leading rice growers to adopt water-saving irrigation practices like aerobic rice in order to maintain profitability per megalitre of water input. This study aimed to investigate the effect of increasing soil moisture deficit during the rice vegetative period in a temperate Australian environment. The research found that extending soil moisture deficit beyond 15 kPa significantly delayed panicle initiation and reduced yield, but sound water productivity can still be achieved with aerobic rice cultivation in temperate climates.

Exploring competitiveness of surface water versus ground water irrigation and their impacts on rice productivity and efficiency: An empirical analysis from Bangladesh

Md. Abdus Salam et al.

Summary: The choice of irrigation water sources is crucial in rice farming, and this study analyzes the productivity and efficiency differences and determinants of surface and groundwater irrigation users in Bangladesh. Results show that groundwater irrigation has a robust effect in enhancing rice productivity and efficiency. Other significant drivers of productivity include seed quality, fertilizer, and soil type. Efficiency is influenced by plot ownership, irrigation frequency, subsidy, and family size. There is a need to devise innovative strategies to increase the use of surface water irrigation without sacrificing productivity and efficiency.
