Investigation of the local photothermal effects by fabricating a CQDs/Au/TiO2 photoelectrode in a PEC water splitting system

Angran Cao et al.

Summary: The local photothermal effects of a CQDs/Au/TiO2 nanorod array composite photoanode were studied and modeled by an equivalent simplified temperature field model. The results showed that the local thermal effect stimulated the activity of TiO2, enhanced charge transfer and surface dynamic reaction. The combined effects of plasmonic Au nanoparticles and carbon quantum dots improved the carrier concentration and promoted bulk charge separation.

Understanding the effect of interface on the charge separation in Bi2S3@Sn: α-Fe2O3 heterojunction for photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Jiajia Cai et al.

Summary: This study designs and implements Bi2S3@α-Fe2O3 for enhancing photocurrent and photoelectrochemical water splitting efficiency, with a modulated interface by Sn doping in α-Fe2O3. The results show that the photocurrent of Bi2S3@(Sn)α-Fe2O3 after interface regulation is 6.7 times higher than that of the primary α-Fe2O3. The enhancement in photocurrent can be attributed to broadened light-harvesting, enhanced charge separation efficiency, and abundant oxygen vacancies.

The role of selective contacts and built-in field for charge separation and transport in photoelectrochemical devices

Markus Schleuning et al.

Summary: Direct photoelectrochemical solar water splitting has the potential to be a key element in sustainable energy supply, but metal oxide-based integrated systems still lack high efficiencies. The appropriate design of semiconductor-catalyst and semiconductor-electrolyte interfaces is crucial for achieving higher solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies. Improved contact design should be a major research direction to enhance the performance of PEC devices.
