Experimental study on the super-hydrophobic coating performance for solar photovoltaic modules at different wind directions

Hao Lu et al.

Summary: Currently, the development of solar photovoltaic power generation technology is advancing rapidly worldwide in order to achieve carbon neutrality. The deposition of dust on solar photovoltaic modules is a major factor in the decline of power generation efficiency. While there have been numerous outdoor experiments and simulations investigating the factors affecting dust deposition, there is a lack of research conducted in an indoor setting and into the impact of wind direction. This paper presents three indoor wind tunnel experiments that evaluate the performance of super-hydrophobic coatings, considering wind speed, tilt angle, and wind direction. The results demonstrate that the use of super-hydrophobic coatings can significantly reduce dust deposition and improve photoelectric conversion efficiency.

Quantifying the accuracy of optical transmission loss techniques and identifying the best wavelengths for estimating soiling in a field study

Aniket Ratnaparkhi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on quantifying the accuracy of different methodologies for estimating soiling losses and identifying the best single wavelengths for estimating soiling loss in solar PVs. The results showed that methodologies considering either the spectral irradiance of the solar spectrum or both the spectral irradiance of the solar spectrum and the spectral response of the PV material provided the best soiling estimates. The study also found that the Ultraviolet and Visible regions had low accuracy in estimating actual soiling losses.

Reduction in solar PV soiling loss using hydrophobic coating with and without dew suppression

Aniket Ratnaparkhi et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to compare the soiling on hydrophobic coatings with and without dew suppression. The results show that under dew suppression, the hydrophobic coating reduces soiling by 50% (±13%) compared to the hydrophobic coating without dew suppression. Additionally, the hydrophobic coating (under dew suppression) reduces particle deposition by 60.0% (±8.1%) in the 10 to 30 μm range compared to uncoated slides (under dew suppression). However, the dust potency for uncoated and coated samples is statistically similar.

Quantum-sized TiO2 particles as highly stable super-hydrophilic and self-cleaning antisoiling coating for photovoltaic application

Narendra Chundi et al.

Summary: Soiling negatively impacts power generation and reduces the efficiency of solar energy conversion devices. To address this issue, we successfully synthesized highly photocatalytic quantum-size TiO2 particles with an average size of 6 nm and used them to create a transparent antisoiling coating. The coating exhibited excellent weather stability and photoinduced superhydrophilicity, and demonstrated promising antisoiling performance on PV modules.

Field tests of a self-sintering, anti-soiling, self-cleaning, nanoporous metal oxide, transparent thin film coating for solar photovoltaic modules

Kenneth A. Walz et al.

Summary: This paper presents the application and field trial results of nanoporous metal oxide ceramic coatings prepared using sol-gel techniques on solar photovoltaic modules. The coatings impart anti-static properties, improve wetting behavior, and degrade soiling deposits through photocatalytic activity. The results of the trial are significant for the commercialization of this coating technology and provide motivation for further research and development efforts.

Outdoor performance of anti-soiling coatings in various climates of Saudi Arabia

Muhammad Zahid Khan et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the outdoor performance of anti-soiling coatings at eight different locations in Saudi Arabia, showing significant variations in anti-soiling functionality depending on location and exposure period. Overall, some coatings showed improved anti-soiling performance compared to an uncoated reference glass, while others showed decreased performance.

Seasonal photovoltaic soiling: Analysis of size and composition of deposited particulate matter

Michael Valerino et al.

Summary: Photovoltaic soiling, a major concern for renewable energy generation, varies seasonally with higher rates during dry periods and negligible rates during monsoon. Monsoon rains significantly alter size distribution, leading to milli-scale non-uniformity, while composition remains consistent throughout the year. Moisture leads to various cementation products and fungal growth on the surface of solar panels.

Experimental investigation of the anti-soiling performances of different wettability of transparent coatings: Superhydrophilic, hydrophilic, hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coatings

Zu-Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of surface roughness and surface energy on reducing dust adhesion on PV panels by preparing coatings with different wettability. It was found that the high surface energy of superhydrophilic coatings played a significant role in resisting dust adhesion, while further reducing surface energy on other coatings had limited impact on improving dust-proof ability. Additionally, large airflow velocity was beneficial for resisting dust adhesion for all types of coatings, but had limited effect on improving the anti-soiling effect of superhydrophilic coating under different tilt angles compared to other three coatings.
