Effect of different objective functions on control performance of tuned mass damper for a high-rise building considering soil-structure interaction

Onur Araz et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the optimization of the tuned mass damper (TMD) for high-rise buildings under earthquake conditions considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). The study evaluates and compares the control performance of different objective functions for TMD design. By using particle swarm algorithm (PSA), the optimum parameters of TMD are determined to minimize the acceleration transfer function. The results show that the effectiveness of TMD is influenced by SSI effects, earthquake records, soil types, and objective functions.

Optimization and performance assessment of tuned mass damper inerter systems for control of buildings subjected to pulse-like ground motions

Salah Djerouni et al.

Summary: This article presents the application of optimally tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI) systems in controlling displacement demands on structures affected by pulse-like near fault ground motions. The study uses simplified mathematical models and recorded near-fault ground motions to investigate the effectiveness of TMDIs. The results show that properly optimized TMDIs can effectively control structural response and are also effective in controlling structures that are not resonating with the pulse but still experience high demands.

Effect of earthquake frequency content on seismic-induced vibration control of structures equipped with tuned mass damper

Onur Araz et al.

Summary: The main objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of earthquake frequency content on the optimization of tuned mass damper (TMD) for multi-storey buildings. The dynamic responses of buildings equipped with TMD under different earthquake records are analyzed, and the optimum parameters of TMD are obtained using an advanced firefly algorithm. The results show that the frequency content of earthquake ground motions has a significant effect on the optimum parameters of TMD and its control performance.

Optimization of tuned mass damper inerter for a high-rise building considering soil-structure interaction

Onur Araz

Summary: This study proposes a methodology for optimizing the parameters of tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI) considering soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects to reduce the maximum structural responses of high-rise buildings under earthquakes. An improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm is used to obtain the optimal parameters, and the influence of different mass ratios, inertance ratios, and support conditions on the control performance of TMDI is investigated. Numerical results demonstrate the significant impact of SSI effects and inertance ratio on the optimal design and effectiveness of TMDI.

Optimum vertical location and design of multiple tuned mass dampers under seismic excitations

Baki Ozturk et al.

Summary: An efficient method for the vertical location and design of multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) has been proposed to reduce the response of building structures under seismic excitation. The method uses optimization techniques to determine the location and parameters of each tuned mass damper (TMD), and takes into account the effects of multiple frequency peak regions. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method is effective in reducing the dynamic response of building structures.

Optimization of three-element tuned mass damper based on minimization of the acceleration transfer function for seismically excited structures

Onur Araz

Summary: This study proposes a methodology for optimizing the position of T-TMD at the top floor of multi-degree of freedom structures to minimize the amplitude of the acceleration transfer function. The T-TMD is optimized using an AFA algorithm and the optimum parameters are verified through benchmark earthquakes. Numerical results show that the optimum T-TMD is effective in reducing the maximum structural responses of multi-story buildings under seismic excitations.
