Bound water characteristics and microstructure evolution during uniaxial compression of mucky silty clay

Shuo Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the secondary compression coefficient (C-alpha) reaches a peak and then slowly decreases with increasing vertical stress, while the value of C-alpha decreases with time. As the vertical stress increases, the microstructure transitions from a loose skeleton-flocculate to a compact agglomerate structure.

Summary: In this study, the mechanical properties of fissured loess under different inclination angles were investigated through vibration and compression tests. The results showed that the failure mode of fissured loess is independent of vibration disturbance, and four different failure modes were identified.

Microstructure and compressibility evolution of sulfate saline compacted loess under drying-wetting cycles

Yongpeng Nie et al.

Summary: Soil salinization has significant effects on the engineering performance and microstructural properties of loess. The compressibility of loess samples deteriorates with increasing drying-wetting cycles and salt content, and the compressibility coefficient shows a linear relationship with the salt content. The enhanced effective connectivity of pores in saline compacted loess is the main reason for the deterioration of compressibility.

Destructuration of saturated natural loess: From experiments to constitutive modeling

Yukai Fu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the mechanical behavior and evolution of structural damage of saturated natural loess. It is found that the natural soil structure has a significant influence on the properties of the loess. A constitutive model based on experimental observations is proposed, which can predict the compression and shear behavior of both undisturbed and remolded saturated loess.

Probabilistic evaluation of loess landslide impact using multivariate model

Ling Xu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on constructing a loess landslide database and developing a multivariate model to quantitatively evaluate the possible impact of potentially unstable loess slopes, providing important information for risk management. The proposed method is effectively applied in a case study of loess landslides in Baoji City, offering a straightforward tool for geotechnical engineers or decision-makers to assess the impact of potentially unstable loess slopes.

Matias Romero et al.

Summary: Paleoclimatic reconstruction is crucial for understanding present-day climate and testing future climate change models. This study examines clay mineral composition in modern dust source areas and loess deposits in southern South America to gain insight into past environmental conditions. The research contributes to reconstructing past climatic scenarios and assessing the strength of different South American dust sources.

Experimental study on improvement design of loess curing in engineering environment

Yuchuan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that in engineering environment, the fast change periods of strength and permeability of improved loess start later and continue for a longer time compared to laboratory conditions. Over the long term, the improvement effect still occurs at a slow rate. The properties of untreated loess have a significant role in strength and permeability, with silt and silty clay having different effect ways.

A Coupled Macroscopic and Mesoscopic Creep Model of Soft Marine Soil Using a Directional Probability Entropy Approach

Cuiying Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents a creep model of soft marine soil to predict long-term deformation behavior and found that the probability entropy of particle orientation is a critical parameter governing creep deformation behavior. Experimental results show linear negative correlations between porosity and pore ratio with stress and generally nonlinear relationships between fractal dimension of pore distribution and probability entropy of particle orientation under stress.

Dynamic characteristics of Xianyang loess based on microscopic analysis: a quantitative evaluation

Huie Chen et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluated the relationship between microstructure and dynamic characteristics of saturated loess, finding that the dynamic elastic modulus of loess under different dynamic loads is related to microstructural parameters. The results indicate that the dynamic elastic modulus of loess is mainly influenced by the microstructural characteristics of pores under different waveform, confining pressure, and amplitude conditions, while it is controlled by the microstructural characteristics of structural units when the frequency changes. Moreover, the sensitivity of microstructural parameters of pores is generally higher than that of structural units under different loading conditions.

Microstructural changes and micro-macro-relationships of an intact, compacted and remolded loess for land-creation project from the Loess Plateau

Zhiqing Li et al.

Summary: The Loess Plateau is a vital area for land creation projects, with important implications for city development and infrastructure safety. Different states of loess (intact, compacted, remolded) exhibit differences in microstructural characteristics, with remolded loess showing lower compressibility and specific surface area. Compacted loess at higher densities display specific particle structure changes under high-energy impact load. The threshold value of dry density at 1710 kg/m(3) + 10 kg/m(3) defines the boundaries and micro-macro relationships among the different states of loess.

Evaluation of Structural Strength and Parameters of Collapsible Loess

Lei Pan et al.

Summary: Studies conducted on collapsible loess from Xinjiang, western China, using double-oedometer tests have revealed the relationship between structural strength and parameters of the loess with moisture content and vertical pressure variations. A model has been proposed to evaluate the structural strength and parameters of collapsible loess based on the damage caused by soaking on the loess anticompression capabilities. These findings are useful for evaluating the structural strength, stability, and water sensitivity of collapsible loess for geotechnical engineers.
