Isolating the direct and indirect impacts of urbanization on vegetation carbon sequestration capacity in a large oasis city: evidence from Urumqi, China

Qingwei Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of urbanization on vegetation carbon sequestration capacity in oasis cities. The results show that urbanization leads to a decrease in vegetation area and carbon loss, but does not change the overall carbon sequestration trend, only slowing down its rate of increase. These findings are important for the sustainable development of oasis cities and regional carbon neutrality.

Understanding the pattern and mechanism of spatial concentration of urban land use, population and economic activities: a case study in Wuhan, China

Zehui Li et al.

Summary: This study in Wuhan, China, reveals that urban elements exhibit an inverse S-shaped decay outward from the city center. Business Point-of-Interest (POI) density and population density are highly aggregated, while floor area ratio and road density are moderately aggregated, and built-up density is poorly aggregated. Three types of spatial aggregation patterns are identified: a point-shaped pattern, an axial pattern, and a planar pattern.

Carbon budget for a plastic-film mulched and drip-irrigated cotton field in an oasis of Northwest China

Guanghui Ming et al.

Summary: Plastic-film mulched drip irrigation (PFMDI) combines plastic film mulching (PFM) and drip irrigation (DI) to save water in arid areas, enhancing crop yield and respiration. However, the net ecosystem carbon (C) budget (NECB) in PFMDI fields is negatively impacted, with a reduction in Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP) and overall C loss due to increased respiration. Management practices such as straw return, organic fertilizer, less tillage, and PFM and DI recovery should be applied to counteract C loss in PFMDI systems.

Chemical structure of soil organic matter and its role in aggregate formation in Haplic Chernozem under the contrasting land use variants

Summary: The study revealed that bare fallow led to significant increases in decomposition and aromaticity of organic matter, as well as an increase in hydrophobicity, impacting the size of structural units. This resulted in almost complete destruction of one of the most valuable agronomic aggregate-size classes (2-1 mm) in bare fallow, and a redistribution of water-stable aggregate-size classes towards a decrease in their dimension.

The regulatory effects of biotic and abiotic factors on soil respiration under different land-use types

H. B. Xiao et al.

Summary: Land use types significantly affect the soil carbon and nitrogen levels, with grassland and woodland showing higher levels due to higher plant residues and lower human disturbance. Soil respiration (Rs) decreases from summer to winter, influenced mainly by soil temperature and moisture. Q10 values vary across different land use types, with temperature, pH, microbial biomass nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, bacterial abundance, available nitrogen, and soil moisture being the most important predictors of Rs.

Mapping soil organic carbon stock by hyperspectral and time-series multispectral remote sensing images in low-relief agricultural areas

Long Guo et al.

Summary: High-precision digital soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks mapping plays a crucial role in agricultural production management and global carbon cycle. This study successfully predicted SOC stock, SOC, and soil bulk density through hyperspectral and time-series multispectral remote sensing images, with the extreme learning machine (ELM) model outperforming the partial least square regression (PLSR) model. The combination of Sentinel 2 images and ELM achieved the best prediction results for soil properties in low relief farmland regions. This mapping strategy using time-series multispectral remote sensing images provides valuable information for agricultural management and carbon cycle research.
