Native Sheep Breeds in Poland-Importance and Outcomes of Genetic Resources Protection Programmes

Aldona Kawecka et al.

Summary: The paper presents the current situation of native sheep breeding in Poland and discusses the importance and effects of genetic resources protection programmes. Despite their unique features and adaptability, the population of native sheep breeds has significantly decreased in recent years. Sustainable management and conservation measures, along with the production and promotion of high-quality products, can help increase the population size and preserve genetic diversity.

Evaluation of genetic differentiation and genome-wide selection signatures in Polish local sheep breeds

Artur Gurgul et al.

Summary: The study found that the genetic structures of the populations of the seven conserved sheep breeds or local populations in Poland are not heavily affected, except for the Swiniarka breed. Each breed has distinct genetic profiles with signs of common origin and admixture, similar to other worldwide sheep populations. The analysis identified loci of the genome with the strongest divergence between the breeds, primarily due to artificial selection, providing a basis for further studies aimed at identifying sources of genetic variation in these sheep breeds.
