Direct synthesis and chemical vapor deposition of 2D carbide and nitride MXenes

Di Wang et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional transition-metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are extensively studied materials with diverse applications in energy storage. We demonstrate a direct synthesis route for scalable and atom-economic production of MXenes, including previously unattainable compounds, by reactions of metals and metal halides with graphite, methane, or nitrogen. The directly synthesized MXenes exhibit excellent energy storage capacity for lithium-ion intercalation, and their growth can be controlled to form unique morphologies such as carpets and spherulites.

Summary: MXenes are attracting attention for their versatile physicochemical characteristics. Despite significant advancements in synthesis and application sectors, the spontaneous oxidation of MXenes has been neglected due to its chemical complexity and poorly understood oxidation mechanism. This perspective focuses on the oxidation stability of MXenes and provides insights into the recent advancements and countermeasures to limit spontaneous oxidation. It also discusses the methods for monitoring oxidation, the debatable oxidation mechanism, and the challenges in mitigating MXenes oxidation.

High-throughput screening of phase-engineered atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides for van der Waals contacts at the Schottky-Mott limit

Yanyan Li et al.

Summary: A main challenge in developing two-dimensional devices based on atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is achieving metal-semiconductor junctions (MSJs) with low contact resistance and high charge transport capability. Through first-principles calculations, researchers have proposed a solution using van der Waals (vdW) contacts between metallic and semiconducting TMDs, which can reduce the Fermi-level pinning and chemical disorder at the interfaces. By applying a phase-engineering strategy, a wide range of TMD vdW MSJs with desired contact types has been achieved. The study provides a fundamental understanding of the contact properties of TMD vdW MSJs and demonstrates their potential for electronics and optoelectronics applications.

Fermi Level Pinning Dependent 2D Semiconductor Devices: Challenges and Prospects

Xiaochi Liu et al.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of Fermi level pinning (FLP) in 2D semiconductor devices and its causes. The authors indicate that FLP is mainly due to inefficient doping into 2D materials, vdW gap at the metal interface, and hybridized compounds formed under contacting metals. The article further explores the effects of FLP on 2D device performance and methods for improving metallic contact to 2D materials.

Polarization-Induced Band-Alignment Transition and Nonvolatile p-n Junctions in 2D Van der Waals Heterostructures

Mingjun Yang et al.

Summary: A nonvolatile doping strategy is reported for obtaining self-defined p-n junctions in 2D vdW heterostructures created by assembling monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides on polar semiconductors. The results show that the quantum-confined Stark effect plays an important role in spatial distribution, allowing manipulation of carrier types through polarization modulation. This work demonstrates the realization of nonvolatile p-n junctions with high carrier concentration in TMD/PS heterostructures and provides a band-engineering approach for versatile 2D electronics and optoelectronics development.

Summary: 2D carbides and nitrides of transition metals, known as MXenes, are a new class of 2D nanomaterials that show excellent performance and broad application prospects in various fields. However, their surface functional groups are difficult to control due to the exposure of metal atoms and implanted ions during the extraction process. By adding synergistic additives under non-hazardous conditions, stable and efficient MXene-based materials with exceptional optical, electrical, and magnetic properties can be obtained.

Surface Functionalization of 2D MXenes: Trends in Distribution, Composition, and Electronic Properties

Rina Ibragimova et al.

Summary: This study explores the distribution and composition of surface functional groups on different MXenes using a multiscale computational approach. It shows that mixtures of functional groups are favorable on all studied MXene surfaces and that the distribution of functional groups is largely independent of the type of metal, carbon, or nitrogen species and/or number of atomic layers in the MXene. Some properties strongly depend on surface composition, while others exhibit only weak dependence.

Near-ideal van der Waals rectifiers based on all-two-dimensional Schottky junctions

Xiankun Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a near-ideal rectifier in all-2D Schottky junctions composed of 1T-MoTe2 and monolayer MoS2 was reported, demonstrating an efficient strategy to address Fermi pinning effects and increase Schottky barrier height. By optimizing the van der Waals integration of the two 2D materials and reducing intrinsic defect doping in MoS2, the Schottky barrier width was effectively enlarged by 59%. The rectifier showed a near-unity ideality factor, high rectifying ratio, and exceptional external quantum efficiency, suggesting a promising alternative to enhance the performance of 2D-material-based electronic devices.

Modified MAX Phase Synthesis for Environmentally Stable and Highly Conductive Ti3C2 MXene

Tyler S. Mathis et al.

Summary: By including excess aluminum during the synthesis of the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase precursor, improved Al-Ti3C2 nanosheets with enhanced crystallinity and carbon stoichiometry are produced, leading to higher resistance to oxidation and increased electronic conductivity. The shelf life of aqueous suspensions of stoichiometric single-to few-layer Al-Ti3C2 flakes made from the modified precursor is extended to over ten months, compared to 1 to 2 weeks for previously published Ti3C2. Additionally, the improved Al-Ti3C2 exhibits oxidation initiation at temperatures 100-150 degrees C higher than conventional Ti3C2, demonstrating potential for widespread use of this material.
