Phase Transformation and Switching Behavior of Magnetron Plasma Sputtered Ge2Sb2Se4Te

Steven A. Vitale et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crystalline-to-amorphous transition in the chalcogenide phase-change material GSST, confirming that the transition is driven by the conversion of Ge-6Se octahedra to Ge-4Se tetrahedra with additional Se being incorporated into the Se-Se network. The study also shows that GSST exhibits no qualitative change in the Raman spectrum across 1000 crystallization-amorphization cycles. However, recrystallization becomes less complete after several hundred cycles, likely due to dewetting of GSST during high-temperature amorphization.

Ultra-compact nonvolatile phase shifter based on electrically reprogrammable transparent phase change materials

Carlos Rios et al.

Summary: Optical phase shifters are fundamental building blocks for programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs), but the existing phase shifters are volatile and require constant power supply, limiting their use in certain applications. To overcome this limitation, researchers have introduced a new phase shifting mechanism using a transparent phase change material, which enables zero-static power and electrically-driven phase shifting. This approach improves phase modulation and insertion loss performance, and also allows for additional functionalities such as extinction ratio trimming and speed enhancement.

Summary: The combination of chalcogenide phase change materials (PCMs) such as GST with silicon photonics addresses technical challenges faced by silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Optical and electrical pulse excitation induce phase change processes in GST-loaded silicon waveguide and multimode interferometer, with optical pulse excitation offering advantages in operation speed and energy efficiency, while electrical pulse excitation is more suitable for large-scale integration. This study contributes to a better understanding of the phase change process and advances the development of the Si-GST hybrid photonic integration platform for new potential applications.
