High Resolution Electrochemical Imaging for Sulfur Vacancies on 2D Molybdenum Disulfide

Chaoqun Gu et al.

Summary: Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Introducing sulfur vacancies on the MoS2 inert basal plane is a commonly used method to enhance its HER activity. However, nanoscale imaging of active sites and quantitative analysis of electrocatalytic activity in electrolyte aqueous solution pose challenges. In this study, high-resolution scanning electrochemical microscopy was used to image the HER activity of sulfur vacancies on MoS2, and the kinetic data for sulfur vacancies were quantitatively measured.

In Situ Device-Level TEM Characterization Based on Ultra-Flexible Multilayer MoS2 Micro-Cantilever

Chaojian Hou et al.

Summary: The current state-of-the-art in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization technology can manipulate specimens at the nanoscale and provide atom-level material attributes. However, there is a barrier between material attributes investigations and device-level application explorations due to immature in situ TEM manufacturing technology and sufficient external stimuli. This study proposes an in situ opto-electromechanical TEM characterization platform by integrating an ultra-flexible micro-cantilever chip with optical, mechanical, and electrical coupling fields. The platform enables static and dynamic in situ device-level TEM characterizations using molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as the channel material. The experiments demonstrate electron-beam modulation behavior and bending of MoS2 nanodevices, revealing piezoresistive and opto-electromechanical coupling properties. Real-time atom-level characterization is achieved using this approach, providing a step towards advanced in situ device-level TEM characterization technology.

Summary: Understanding the chemical and electronic properties of point defects in two-dimensional materials is crucial for the development of functional systems. In this study, sulfur vacancies were created in monolayer MoS2 and their properties were monitored using synchrotron-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The formation of sulfur vacancies resulted in a shift of the Fermi level, introduction of electronic states within the valence band, and formation of lateral pn junctions. Additionally, these defects were found to be metastable upon short-term exposure to ambient air, but could be passivated through in situ oxygen exposure.
