Molecular Resolution Nanostructure and Dynamics of the Deep Eutectic Solvent-Graphite Interface as a Function of Potential

Justin S. Freeman et al.

Summary: Interest in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) has grown in the past decade, especially for electrochemical applications, due to their versatility, low cost, renewability, and non-toxicity. This study used atomic force microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the nanostructure and dynamics of the well-studied DES mixture 1:2 choline chloride:urea (reline) on a graphite surface. Highly ordered lateral nanostructures with unprecedented molecular resolution were revealed, providing valuable insight for the rational design of DESs for interfacial applications.

Extremely slow dynamics of ionic liquid self-assembled nanostructures near a solid surface

Hua Li et al.

Summary: The dynamics of self-assembled liquid nanostructures of ionic liquids near a mica surface were determined using video-rate atomic force microscopy (AFM) data. The AFM videos revealed that the nanostructures near the surface diffused much slower than individual ions in the bulk. This finding has important implications for processes involving concentrated electrolyte interfacial dynamics.

Tuneable interphase transitions in ionic liquid/carrier systems via voltage control

Sichao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interfacial structure and compositional changes of two non-halogenated phosphonium orthoborate ionic liquids (ILs) under the influence of an electric field. The electrical response was found to be influenced by the applied voltage, the structure of the ions, and the solvent polarizability. The research revealed that one IL exhibited an anomalous electro-responsivity, indicating the formation of a self-assembling bilayer structure at the gold interface, which transitioned to a typical electric double-layer structure at higher positive potential.

Differential dynamic microscopy for the characterization of polymer systems

Summary: DDM is a rapidly emerging approach that transforms a commercial microscope by combining real-space information with the powerful capabilities of conventional light scattering analysis. Analysis of a single microscope movie using DDM gives access to sample dynamics in a wide range of scattering wave-vectors, enabling contemporary polymer science experiments that would be difficult or impossible with standard light scattering techniques. Further applications of DDM to a variety of polymer systems are likely to be just around the corner, making DDM a tool of choice for modern experimental polymer scientists.

Atomistic modelling approaches to understanding the interfaces of ionic liquid electrolytes for batteries and electrochemical devices

Fangfang Chen

Summary: This article reviews the current atomistic computational methods used to understand electrolyte-electrode interfaces, with a focus on ionic liquid electrolytes. These methods have primarily been applied to the study of the ionic liquid electrolyte double layer, electrolyte composition near the electrodes, formation and growth of solid electrolyte interphases, and ion transport across the interfaces and interphases.

Unusual ion transport behaviour of ethylammonium nitrate mixed with lithium nitrate

Andrei Filippov et al.

Summary: The ion diffusivities and ionic conductivities of ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) mixed with lithium nitrate (LiNO3) exhibit unusual behavior over a range of Li-salt concentration and temperature. The overall decrease in ion diffusivity is observed with increasing concentration of LiNO3, while Li+ diffusivity exceeds EA(+) cation in the lower concentration range, indicating the release of Li+ from associates.

Experimental Evidence of Long-Lived Electric Fields of Ionic Liquid Bilayers

Mattia Belotti et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids can form long-lived double layers generating detectable electric fields, with negative voltage pulses leading to stable near-surface dipolar layers. The alignment of individual ion dipoles to external electric field pulses correlates with the resulting open circuit potential, providing insight into interfacial ordering phenomena. A stable overscreened structure is more likely to form if the interface undergoes crowding first, potentially explaining discrepancies in literature data on relaxation kinetics of near-surface structures in ionic liquids.

Electrical Double Layer Structure in Ionic Liquids and Its Importance for Supercapacitor, Battery, Sensing, and Lubrication Applications

Debbie S. Silvester et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids have gained popularity as solvents in various fields, particularly in electrochemistry, due to their high stability, wide electrochemical windows, good conductivity, and solvation properties. Recent research has shown that the structure of the electrical double layer in ILs can affect the behavior of supercapacitors, batteries, sensors, and lubrication systems. Further fundamental work in this area is expected to inform the design of solvents for these applications and beyond.

Improving Cycle Life through Fast Formation Using a Superconcentrated Phosphonium Based Ionic Liquid Electrolyte for Anode-Free and Lithium Metal Batteries

Thushan Pathirana et al.

Summary: Research has shown that using a fast formation protocol can significantly improve the electrochemical performance and cycle life of lithium-ion batteries. The use of a novel phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ionic liquid electrolyte can effectively enhance battery performance. The lower resistance SEI and reduced porous lithium domains resulting from fast formation are the main reasons for performance enhancement.
