Enhancement of Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution Activity of 2D π-Conjugated Bipyridine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks via Post-Protonation

Lu Dai et al.

Summary: This study focuses on COFs-based photocatalysts, in which a 2D fully conjugated ethylene-linked COF (BTT-BPy-COF) with active sites was fabricated. A post-protonation strategy was employed to fine-tune the active sites, leading to improved charge-separation efficiency and increased hydrophilicity. The optimized BTT-BPy-PCOF exhibited a remarkable H-2 evolution rate under visible light, surpassing a biphenyl-based COF 6 times. Post-protonation was proven to be a potential universal strategy for promoting photocatalytic H-2 evolution and providing important guidance for the design of highly efficient organic semiconductor photocatalysts.

Stable Immobilization of Nickel Ions on Covalent Organic Frameworks for Panchromatic Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Hualei Zhang et al.

Summary: Post-coordination design on COFs is an efficient strategy to enhance the photocatalytic activity. However, the rigidity of 2D COFs hinders their adaptability to specific conformations of metal complexes. In this study, nickel(II) ions were immobilized into a 2D COF, resulting in a stable coordination motif and significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. The optimized H-2 evolution rate reached 51,300 μmol/h·g, 2.5 times higher than the pristine COF. This work provides a strategy for optimizing the metal-COF coordination system and enhancing electronic regulation in photocatalysis.

Intermediate Formation of Macrocycles for Efficient Crystallization of 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks with Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Kuixing Wang et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are considered as efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen production from solar light. However, the current synthetic conditions for obtaining highly crystalline COFs are complex and hinder their practical application. This study presents a simple strategy for efficient crystallization of 2D COFs based on the formation of hexagonal macrocycles. The results show that this strategy enables the synthesis of highly crystalline COFs in a short time, while maintaining a high hydrogen production rate.

Tuning excited state electronic structure and charge transport in covalent organic frameworks for enhanced photocatalytic performance

Zhongshan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a family of isoreticular crystalline hydrazide-based COF photocatalysts was constructed using reticular chemistry, with their optoelectronic properties and local pore characteristics modulated by different linkers. The excited state electronic distribution and transport pathways in the COFs were investigated at a molecular level using experimental methods and theoretical calculations. One of the developed COFs, COF-4, exhibited remarkable excited state electron utilization efficiency and charge transfer properties, achieving a record-high photocatalytic uranium extraction performance of approximately 6.84 mg/g/day in natural seawater among all techniques reported so far. This study provides a new understanding of COF-based photocatalyst operation and guides the design of improved COF photocatalysts for various applications.

Linkage Microenvironment of Azoles-Related Covalent Organic Frameworks Precisely Regulates Photocatalytic Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide

Yi Mou et al.

Summary: Artificial H2O2 photosynthesis by covalent organic frameworks (COFs) photocatalysts is a promising method for wastewater treatment. This study successfully synthesized three types of azoles-linked COFs and found that the thiazole-linked structure in TZ-COF is more favorable for H2O2 production. The active sites in COFs were found to be located at the benzene ring fragment between the pyrene unit and azole linkage.

Perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with internal electric fields and anisotropic charge migration for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Yan Guo et al.

Summary: This study synthesized perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 1.5 nm and demonstrated their activity as highly efficient hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. The introduction of carboxyl groups increased the internal electric fields, promoting charge-carrier separation, and weakened charge-carrier recombination by migrating photogenerated electrons and holes to the edge and plane, respectively. Furthermore, the reduction potential and hydrophilic sites of perylenetetracarboxylic acid were enhanced. This work provides a strategy for designing future efficient photocatalysts.
