Highly Selective Photoelectroreduction of Carbon Dioxide to Ethanol over Graphene/Silicon Carbide Composites

Guanghui Feng et al.

Summary: Using sunlight and a graphene/SiC catalyst, we achieved a high selectivity of>99% for ethanol production from CO2 through artificial photosynthesis. The CO2 conversion rate reached up to 17.1 mmol g(cat)(-1) h(-1) with sustained performance. Experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the optimal interfacial layer between SiC substrate and graphene overlayer facilitated efficient electron transfer and CO2 to C2H5OH conversion.

Identification of CO2 adsorption sites on MgO nanosheets by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

Jia-Huan Du et al.

Summary: Understanding the surface structure and binding sites of oxide nanomaterials is crucial for developing better materials for adsorption and catalytic processes. This study demonstrates the use of O-17 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to identify specific CO2 adsorption sites on MgO nanosheets. The results provide valuable insights into the difference between two surface oxygen sites and their involvement in CO2 adsorption.

Atomically Dispersed Indium-Copper Dual-Metal Active Sites Promoting C-C Coupling for CO2 Photoreduction to Ethanol

Hainan Shi et al.

Summary: This study presents a dual-metal photocatalyst consisting of atomically dispersed indium and copper anchored on polymeric carbon nitride, which achieved high ethanol production rate and selectivity by enhancing charge separation and electron transfer between indium and copper active sites. Moreover, the dual-metal sites promoted the adsorption of *CO intermediates and lowered the energy barrier of C-C coupling, contributing to the high performance of the catalyst in CO2 photoreduction.

Polarization of CO2 for improved CO2 adsorption by MgO and Mg(OH)2

Shunnian Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the CO2 adsorption process on MgO and Mg(OH)2 surfaces, revealing that H2O molecules significantly enhance CO2 capture on MgO but not on Mg(OH)2, while dehydration defects on Mg(OH)2 dramatically increase the CO2 absorption energy. Three electronic mechanisms responsible for the increase in CO2 adsorption energy were identified, potentially enabling the design of composite MgO/Mg(OH)2 adsorbents with exciting possibilities in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage applications.

Direct CO2 capture and conversion to fuels on magnesium nanoparticles under ambient conditions simply using water

Sushma A. Rawool et al.

Summary: By using magnesium as a catalyst, CO2 can be converted into methane, methanol and formic acid without the need for external energy input. The reaction occurs at 300K and 1 bar within a few minutes, with hydrogen being the predominant product. The cooperative action of magnesium, basic magnesium carbonate, CO2, and water is essential for this transformation, and any missing component will result in the inhibition of the CO2 conversion process.
