Current and lifetime somatic symptom burden among transition-aged autistic young adults

Zachary J. Williams et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, impact, and clinical correlates of somatic symptoms in individuals on the autism spectrum. The results showed that somatic symptom burden was much higher in autistic young adults compared to the general population, particularly in women. These symptoms were associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, autistic traits, and lower quality of life.

Terrible twos: intravenous iron ameliorates a toddler's iron deficiency and sleep disturbance

Baha Al-Shawwa et al.

Summary: The relationship between iron deficiency and restless legs syndrome has been extensively studied. Diagnosis of restless legs syndrome in children under the age of 5 is challenging. Many children are misdiagnosed with behavioral insomnia of childhood. This article presents a case of a 2-year-old child with restless legs symptoms, which were successfully treated with iron infusion.

Chronic insomnia of early childhood: Phenotypes and pathophysiology

Oliviero Bruni et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the limitations of current classification of insomnia in early childhood and proposes a new conceptual model to better understand its pathophysiology. The authors hypothesize that chronic insomnia of childhood has different phenotypical expressions associated with different pathophysiological mechanisms. Based on their research and evaluation of a large number of children with specific insomnia symptoms, they describe three phenotypes of insomnia in early childhood, each with different therapeutic implications. This categorization may have important implications for treatment, based on the different hypothetical neuro-transmitter dysfunctions.

Summary: Sleep disorders are common in childhood, and melatonin is commonly prescribed by community paediatricians in the UK.
