Racial/Ethnic and Sex/Gender Differences in Sleep Duration Trajectories From Adolescence to Adulthood in a US National Sample

Ryan Saelee et al.

Summary: Racial/ethnic and sex/gender differences in sleep duration trajectories from adolescence to adulthood were examined using data from a longitudinal study. Three common trajectory types were identified, and the need to intervene in early adolescence to prevent short sleep duration in adulthood was emphasized.

Blunted rest-activity rhythm is associated with increased white blood-cell-based inflammatory markers in adults: an analysis from NHANES 2011-2014

Yanyan Xu et al.

Summary: Disruption of circadian rhythm is associated with immune system disturbance and chronic inflammation. This study examined the association between rest-activity circadian rhythm and chronic inflammation using white blood-cell-based inflammatory indices. The results showed that a stronger circadian rhythm was associated with decreased white blood cell count, neutrophil count, and systemic immune-inflammation index.

Summary: This study provides valuable insights into the characteristics of sleep habits of residents of the United States using objectively measured sleep parameters. The findings show a U-shaped association between sleep duration and age, with females generally sleeping longer than males and non-Hispanic Blacks exhibiting worse sleep characteristics.

Evaluation of Temporal Trends in Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Sleep Duration Among US Adults, 2004-2018

Cesar Caraballo et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study evaluated the 15-year trends in racial and ethnic differences in self-reported sleep duration among adults in the US. The findings suggest that from 2004 to 2018, the prevalence of short and long sleep duration was persistently higher among Black individuals, with the disparities in short sleep duration being highest among women, individuals with middle or high income, and young or middle-aged adults.

Disparities in sleep duration among American children: effects of race and ethnicity, income, age, and sex

Natasha T. Giddens et al.

Summary: Children in the United States sleep less than the recommended time for healthy development, and this issue is particularly severe for disadvantaged children. Factors such as race/ethnicity, income, sex, and age significantly contribute to differences in sleep time, with black children, those from lower income families, boys, and older children sleeping less. Children with higher BMI also have shorter sleep times. However, neighborhood deprivation, experience of discrimination, and parent's age at child's birth do not have a significant impact on sleep time.

Summary: This study found an association between rest-activity rhythm and obesity. Low amplitude, low mesor, low stability, and high fragmentation of the rhythm were associated with general and abdominal obesity. These results highlight the importance of regulating circadian rhythm in obesity management.

Disparities in Sleep Health and Potential Intervention Models A Focused Review

Martha E. Billings et al.

Summary: Recognizing the importance of sleep health disparities and the impact of factors such as socioeconomic status, racism, and access to healthcare, interventions tailored to cultural appropriateness can improve overall health and quality of life. Leveraging technology to enhance sleep health access is a powerful but underutilized tool in addressing sleep disparities. Successful identification, implementation, replication, and dissemination of interventions have the potential to reduce overall health disparities.

Rest-activity rhythms in emerging adults: implications for cardiometabolic health

Elissa K. Hoopes et al.

Summary: Emerging adulthood is a crucial period for modifying the trajectory of cardiometabolic disease risk, and rest-activity rhythms are related to biomarkers of cardiometabolic health in apparently healthy emerging adults. Specifically, higher interdaily stability, lower intradaily variability, and higher autocorrelation emerged as novel biomarkers associated with favorable cardiometabolic health indices.
