Mpox vaccination willingness, determinants, and communication needs in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, in the context of limited vaccine availability in the Netherlands (Dutch Mpox-survey)

Summary: This study investigated vaccine acceptance and its determinants among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, including transgender individuals in the Netherlands. The results showed that 81.5% of respondents were willing to accept vaccination. Determinants for non-acceptance included rural or low-urban residence, not knowing vaccinated individuals, and lack of connection to the gay/queer community. Beliefs associated with acceptance included perception of higher risk/severity of the disease, higher protection motivation, positive outcome expectations, and perceived positive social norms. Respondents recommended better communication, accessible vaccination options, and inclusive vaccine offers.

Historic smallpox vaccination and monkeypox virus infection can generate MPXV-neutralizing antibodies, but vaccination with MVA-BN results in lower levels of these antibodies. Further studies are needed to assess the efficacy of the MVA-BN vaccine in at-risk populations.

Perception of and Vaccine Readiness towards Mpox among Men Who Have Sex with Men Living with HIV in China: A Cross-Sectional Study

Summary: Men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV are the majority of Mpox cases in China. This study investigated their perception of and vaccine readiness towards Mpox. It found that individuals with more sexual partners, closer contacts, worries about Mpox, and belief in the vaccine's safety and efficacy were more willing to get vaccinated. Efforts should be made to increase awareness of the potential risk of Mpox among this high-risk population and address factors influencing vaccine willingness.

Epidemiological, clinical and virological characteristics of four cases of monkeypox support transmission through sexual contact, Italy, May 2022

Summary: Since May 2022, there has been an ongoing monkeypox outbreak in non-endemic countries. Four cases in young adult men in Italy, who engaged in condomless sexual intercourse, were reported. The patients are in good clinical condition and do not require specific antiviral drugs. Monkeypox viral DNA was detected in seminal fluid samples. The possibility of sexual transmission of monkeypox virus needs to be investigated.

High monkeypox vaccine acceptance among male users of smartphone-based online gay-dating apps in Europe, 30 July to 12 August 2022

Summary: This study assesses the acceptance of monkeypox vaccination among male adults in the European Region. An online survey was conducted through two dating apps targeting men who have sex with men, from July 30th to August 12th, 2022. Bayesian hierarchical logistic regression models were developed to investigate monkeypox vaccination acceptance. The overall crude vaccination acceptance rate was 82%, with higher rates in the north-western compared to the south-eastern European regions. Acceptance was strongly associated with perception of increased disease severity and transmission risk, as well as individuals linked to healthcare.

A large multi-country outbreak of monkeypox across 41 countries in the WHO European Region, 7 March to 23 August 2022

Summary: Since the first non-travel-associated cluster of monkeypox cases was reported by the United Kingdom in May 2022, 41 countries in the WHO European Region have reported 21,098 cases and two deaths by August 23, 2022. Nowcasting indicates a plateauing in case notifications. The majority of cases (97%) are among men who have sex with men (MSM), and the symptoms present as atypical rash illness. The main mode of transmission is through close contact during sexual activities. Few cases are reported among women and children. Targeted interventions for high-risk groups are necessary to halt further transmission.
