Application of New Ammonium-Based Ionic Liquids for Dehydration of Crude Oil Emulsions

Mahmood M. S. Abdullah et al.

Summary: In this study, two novel ionic liquids were synthesized and applied for the dehydration of water-in-crude oil emulsions. The results showed that the dehydration performance increased with an increase in the concentration of the ionic liquid, and higher water contents also improved the dehydration performance. The ionic liquid prepared from 4-tetradecylaniline showed higher dehydration performance and better water removal effect.

A critical evaluation of novel demulsifying agents based on acrylic terpolymers for Mexican heavy crude oils dehydration

Jessica V. Fuentes et al.

Summary: A novel random acrylic terpolymer based on butyl acrylate, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate, and 2-carboxyethyl acrylate monomers showed efficient demulsifying properties in heavy crude oils with stable water-in-oil emulsions. The best water removal performance was achieved with terpolymers containing 90-80% of the hydrophobic monomer B and small amounts of the hydrophilic monomers Ae and Ce. The correlation between molecular parameters of the terpolymers and physicochemical parameters of the crude oils allows for accurate prediction of water removal efficiency, aiding in selecting the best demulsifier for a specific petroleum stream.

A critical review of the development and demulsification processes applied for oil recovery from oil in water emulsions

Wamda Faisal et al.

Summary: This review introduces the application of chemical demulsifiers in the recovery of oil from water and water from oil. Different types of surfactants involved in emulsion formation and stability enhancement are discussed, and promising demulsifiers such as nanoparticles, hyperbranched polymers, and ionic liquids are explored. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and hyperbranched polymers achieve high oil recovery rates, while ionic liquids have limitations due to their high cost. Nanoparticles show excellent oil recovery behavior at low concentrations and ambient temperature.

Synthesis, characterization, and application of two new ionic liquids for the dehydration of heavy crude oil emulsions

Noorah A. Faqihi et al.

Summary: This work aims to synthesize two new ionic liquids (ILs) using dodecylamine (DA) and epichlorohydrin (EH), followed by the reaction with either diethylenetriamine (DT) or tetraethylenepentamine (TP). The synthesized ILs were evaluated for their chemical structures, thermal stability, surface and interfacial tensions, and relative solubility number (RSN). It was found that DATP-IL showed higher dehydration efficiency for water-in-heavy crude oil (W/O) emulsions.

Applying ultrasonic fields to separate water contained in medium-gravity crude oil emulsions and determining crude oil adhesion coefficients

Ali Sadatshojaie et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of ultrasonic fields in demulsifying crude oil emulsions using horn-type piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers with a frequency of 20 kHz. The experiments demonstrated that increasing the intensity of ultrasonic fields improves the efficiency of water segregation from crude oil, while irradiation time and initial water content also affect the separation rate.
