Removal of pharmaceutical active compounds in wastewater by constructed wetlands: Performance and mechanisms

Hengfeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the use of constructed wetlands (CWs) for the removal of pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) from water environments. The results demonstrate that CWs perform equally or better than conventional wastewater treatment plants in eliminating PhACs, and highlight the importance of system design, operation, and environmental factors in this process. However, further research is required to address issues such as the behavior of emerging contaminants, identification of specific microorganisms, transformation pathways of pharmaceuticals, and the ecotoxicity evaluation of CWs effluents.
