Application of polysaccharide-based metal organic framework membranes in separation science

Herbert Musarurwa et al.

Summary: Polysaccharide/MOF composite membranes have gained attention for their high chemical and thermal stabilities in decontaminating polluted environments. Chitosan/MOF composite membranes are extensively used in separation science. Mixed matrix membranes of MOFs with cellulose and cyclodextrin have also shown effectiveness in separating various materials, but face challenges.

Enhancing the organophilic separations with mixed matrix membranes of PIM-1 and bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF filler

Tahreem Hafeez Butt et al.

Summary: Novel mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by incorporating bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF nanoparticles into the prototypical polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1). The addition of Zn/Co-ZIF nanoparticles enhanced the hydrophobicity of the MMMs and improved the separation performance of ethanol/water and butanol/water mixtures. It was found that Zn/Co-ZIF/PIM-20 wt% membrane showed the highest separation and flux among all the membranes tested.

Robust and high selective chitosan asymmetric Membranes: Relation between microporous structure and pervaporative efficiency in ethanol dehydration

Pawel Grzybek et al.

Summary: Asymmetric chitosan membranes were used to improve the process of ethanol dehydration, and a strong correlation was found between membrane structure, pore size and separation effectiveness. An interesting phenomenon of membrane structure changing during the pervaporation process was observed, leading to a nonlinear time dependence of transport and separation parameters. The best performance for PV separation was achieved by a membrane prepared from a casting solution containing 0.1 ml of absolute ethanol.

Autoignition of ethanol-diesel blends: Is it worth dehydrating ethanol?

Alexis Cova-Bonillo et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of water concentration in ethanol on the autoignition characteristics of ethanol-diesel blends. The results indicate that water content has little effect on autoignition times in general, but acts as a reactivity inhibitor at low hydrated ethanol contents and as an autoignition enhancer at higher concentrations. The chemical effect associated with water as a third-body becomes more important at higher concentrations.

Efficient separation of methanol/dimethyl carbonate mixtures by UiO-66 MOF incorporated chitosan mixed-matrix membrane

Haipeng Zhu et al.

Summary: Pervaporation of organic-organic mixtures is a promising technique, and incorporating UiO-66 (ZrCl4) metal-organic frameworks into chitosan membranes can enhance their separation performance for methanol-dimethyl carbonate mixtures. The presence of UiO-66 (ZrCl4) nanofillers improves the permeation flux and separation factor, surpassing polymer-based membranes.

Yun Xiong et al.

Summary: This study successfully enhanced the pervaporation performance for ethanol/water separation by incorporating attainable amine functionality in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated by mixing ZIF-8-NH2 with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. The analysis of various characterization techniques showed that the prepared ZIF-8-NH2 and MMMs exhibited better performance, indicating the potential of designing MOF-based MMMs with various functional groups.
