Pyrolysis temperature-regulated gas transport and aging properties in 6FDA-DAM polyimide-derived carbon molecular sieve membranes

Guozhen Liu et al.

Summary: Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes derived from 6FDA-DAM polyimide exhibit improved gas separation efficiency with increasing pyrolysis temperature, leading to densification of the pore structure and enhanced size-sieving effect. Membranes pyrolyzed at higher temperatures are more susceptible to physical aging, but pre-aging treatment can improve and stabilize gas separation performance beyond the upper limit of polymeric membranes. The gas permeation behavior of CMS membranes is dominated by diffusion, making tailoring of gas permeation and physical aging a viable approach to tune their gas transport properties.

The Phase Structural Evolution and Gas Separation Performances of Cellulose Acetate/Polyimide Composite Membrane from Polymer to Carbon Stage

Haojie Li et al.

Summary: Blending and heat-treatment are important in adjusting gas separation performances of membranes, particularly for incorporating thermally labile polymers into carbon molecular sieve membranes. This study introduces cellulose acetate into polyimide as a sacrificial phase to adjust the structure and gas separation performance, resulting in the highest performances in the composite CMSM with 10 wt.% CA content. The chain interactions and phase separation behaviors between CA and PI play critical roles in membrane structures and gas diffusion.

Carbon molecular sieve membranes derived from crosslinkable polyimides for CO2/CH4 and C2H4/C2H6 separations

Qixiang Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes fabricated using carboxylated polyimides exhibited enhanced gas separation performance, particularly in CO2 and olefin separation. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature of polyimides can improve membrane selectivity but reduce permeability, while Zn2+ functionalization can further enhance gas selectivity. These materials have great potential for industrial applications such as CO2 separation and olefin recovery, surpassing Robeson's upper-bound for gas separation.

Subtle penetrant size effects on separation of carbon molecular sieve membranes derived from 6FDA:BPDA-DAM polyimide

Pezhman Arab et al.

Summary: Economically scalable carbon molecular sieve (CMS) hollow fiber membranes rely on tunable bimodal pore morphology to separate gas pairs based on angstrom-level size discrimination. The self-retarding physical aging process of CMS membranes affects gas separation efficiency, particularly in the tightening of ultramicropore size ranges. Understanding and controlling the aging process within CMS membranes can be generalized to other precursor-derived CMS membranes for improved gas separation performance.

Mengjie Hou et al.

Summary: Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes were fabricated by designing polyimides with different diamine moieties to investigate the impact of multiscale structures of precursors on the microstructure and CO2 separation performance. The results indicated that the multiscale structures of polyimides significantly influenced the microstructure and CO2 separation performance of the derived CMS membranes. The CMS membranes prepared from high FFV polyimide with helical chain conformation showed looser carbon structures that were beneficial for CO2 transport, suggesting attractive application prospects for CO2 separation.
