Solar disinfection of drinking water at alkaline pH, assisted by ashes of spices and herbs containing catalytic metals, in a novel ?phyto-Fenton? process

Jorge Rodriguez-Chueca et al.

Summary: This manuscript explores the improvement of solar disinfection (SODIS) for water treatment by utilizing iron replacements, such as calcined herbs and spices, in the photo-Fenton reaction. The study evaluates the bactericidal performance of SODIS, H2O2/light, and solar photo-Fenton in both pure and Lake Leman water. The findings demonstrate that the addition of certain spices/herbs enhances the H2O2/light process, while the use of ashes as substitutes for Fe2+ results in faster kinetics.

Haleh Mohebali et al.

Summary: We investigated the catalytic activity of magnetic CeZrUiO-66 Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) composites (Fe3O4/CeZrUiO-66) for ciprofloxacin degradation by catalytic ozonation. The composite with a 30:70 ratio of Fe3O4:CeZrUiO-66 exhibited the highest efficiency, achieving a 97% elimination yield within 30 minutes. The catalytic ozonation process (COP) showed higher CIP mineralization compared to the single ozonation process (SOP), and OH radicals were identified as the main reactive species.

Deforestation-free land-use change and organic matter-centered management improve the C footprint of oil palm expansion

Juan Carlos Quezada et al.

Summary: This study found that the variability of soil biogeochemical properties within oil palm plantations explained almost five times more than the changes in savanna land-use. Conversion of clayey-soil savanna into oil palm increased the total ecosystem carbon stocks and application of organic residues in management zones enhanced soil organic carbon accumulation. Organic matter-oriented management strategies can improve carbon sink capacity in oil palm agroecosystems and promote soil microbial functioning. However, the conservation of natural savannas should be prioritized due to their uniqueness and threatened biodiversity.

Sustainable and effective degradation of aniline by sodium percarbonate activated with UV in aqueous solution: Kinetics, mechanism and identification of reactive species

Li Li et al.

Summary: Sodium percarbonate (SPC) has been widely used as a solid replacement for H2O2 in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This study investigated the degradation performance of aniline using UV-activated SPC. The results showed that increasing SPC dosage or UV irradiation intensity significantly improved the removal efficiency. Reactive species such as ·OH, CO3·-, and O-2·- were found to play a predominant role in aniline degradation. The addition of Fe(II) in the UV/SPC system enhanced the degradation, while NO3-, HCO3-, and humid acid suppressed the reaction.

Summary: This study investigates the underlying mechanism of solar disinfection (SODIS). The results show that UVA exposure leads to intracellular H2O2 formation, which is responsible for cell death. UVA also inactivates enzymes and suppresses metabolism, enhancing the stress of H2O2 and its killing effect on cells.

Summary: The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in groundwater poses a significant threat to human health worldwide, with Fenton oxidation processes showing promising results in removing naphthalene (NaP). Among different oxidants, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) proved to be the most effective in degrading NaP. Summary: This study characterized Nontronite, a clay mineral with high content of structural iron, before and after iron incorporation and 600 degrees C heat treatment. It was found to be a mesoporous material with high absorption and a band gap energy indicative of superficial hematite. Heat treatment promoted structure rearrangement, converting other iron phases to hematite and creating irregular surface sites, enhancing catalytic activity in the degradation of antibiotics with hydroxylation as the main degradation route.

Photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by novel mesoporous Ag/ZnO@NiFe2O4 nanorods, inducing radical-mediated acetaminophen degradation under UVA irradiation

Mona Kohantorabi et al.

Summary: A new mesoporous Ag/ZnO@NiFe2O4 nanorod was prepared using a facile, low-cost, and environmentally friendly strategy as an effective catalyst and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) photo-activator for ACT degradation. The catalyst showed high catalytic activity and efficient degradation of ACT due to the formation of a hetero-junction structure with NiFe2O4 and ZnO, as well as the presence of Fe3+/Fe2+ and Ni2+/Ni3+ reaction cycles enhancing the PMS activation rate. The study also proposed a plausible mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of ACT based on LC-MS analysis of the reaction intermediates.
