Rational design of molybdenum sulfide/tungsten oxide solar absorber with enhanced photocatalytic degradation toward dye wastewater purification

Mengyu Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, thin molybdenum sulfide nanosheet arrays (MoS2 NSAs) modified by tungsten oxide nanoparticles (WO3) were designed to achieve water purification and photocatalytic degradation of dyes using solar-driven water evaporation. The modification of WO3 enhanced the separation of electrons and holes within the solar absorber, resulting in improved photocatalytic efficiency. The net evaporation rate of the solar absorber reached 0.97 kg m(-2)h(-1) and the degradation rate constant of rhodamine B (RhB) reached 0.101 min(-1) under 1 sun. This study successfully combined photothermal conversion and photocatalytic technologies, providing a new method for the treatment of dye wastewater with zero wastewater discharge.

A Zero-Energy, Zero-Emission Air Conditioning Fabric

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: High indoor humidity/temperature have negative impacts on public health and industrial productivity, while traditional air conditioning systems consume significant energy and contribute to the greenhouse effect. This study presents an asymmetric bilayer cellulose-based fabric that enables solar-driven dehumidification, transpiration-driven power generation, and passive radiative cooling without any energy input. The fabric demonstrates high moisture absorption and evaporation rates, reducing indoor humidity to a comfortable level under sunlight. The evaporation-driven capillary flow generates a maximum open-circuit voltage of 0.82 V and a power density of 1.13 mu W cm(-3). Moreover, the fabric achieves subambient cooling of approximately 12 degrees C and an average cooling power of approximately 106 W m(-2) under radiation of 900 W m(-2). This work opens up possibilities for developing high-performance environmentally friendly materials for sustainable moisture/thermal management and self-powered applications.

A high-efficiency solar water evaporation-photocatalysis system achieved by manipulating surface wettability and constructing heterojunction

Baohua Yuan et al.

Summary: Recent developments in integrating photocatalysis into solar-driven interfacial water evaporation have led to the proposal of beta-In2S3 nanosheets decorated 2H phase MoS2 nanosheet arrays (MSIS) for synchronous solar-driven water evaporation and photodegradation of organic pollutants. The modification of hydrophobic 2H phase MoS2 with In2S3 improved the surface wettability and the narrow bandgaps of both MoS2 and In2S3 ensured high solar absorptance. The formation of heterojunction interfaces between MoS2 and In2S3 enhanced the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.
