Escherichia coli inactivation in water by sulfate radical-based oxidation process using FeCl3-activated biochar/persulfate system

Shengquan Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, FeCl3-activated bermudagrass-derived biochar (FA-BC) was used for the first time to activate persulfate (PS) for E. coli inactivation. The presence of Fe0 and Fe3O4 on the surface of FA-BC contributed to the activation of PS, with SO4 center dot- radicals playing a major role in E. coli inactivation in the FA-BC/PS system. Various factors, such as pH, PS concentration, reaction temperature, and FA-BC dosage, were found to affect the disinfection efficiency of E. coli using FA-BC/PS. The FA-BC/PS showed promising results in terms of E. coli inactivation and removal in different water samples.

Twice-milled magnetic biochar: A recyclable material for efficient removal of methylene blue from wastewater

Nina Yan et al.

Summary: A method of preparing magnetic, recyclable biochar with minimal pore blockage was developed by loading ultrafine magnetite onto ball milled biochar and then milling it for a second time. The deposited magnetite did not significantly wrap the biochar, resulting in a decreased sorption performance. However, the extra milling step restored the surface functional groups and specific surface areas, leading to a 93.8% recovery adsorption of 84.6 +/- 2.5 mg/L on methylene blue. The recyclability of the material was not affected, and the adsorption was driven by multiple interactions. This twice-milled magnetic biochar is highly efficient for sustainable removal of aqueous contaminants.

The effect of biochar and acid activated biochar on ammonia emissions during manure storage

Khagendra Raj Baral et al.

Summary: Animal manure contains valuable plant nutrients which need to be stored until field application. However, the storage process leads to the volatilization of slurry nitrogen in the form of ammonia, which has detrimental effects on human health, biodiversity, air and water quality. This study evaluated the potential of biochars and lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) in reducing NH3 emissions during liquid manure storage. The results showed that acid activated biochars and LECA can effectively mitigate NH3 emissions, with activated biochars exhibiting better potential than LECA.

Chlorination (but Not UV Disinfection) Generates Cell Debris that Increases Extracellular Antibiotic Resistance Gene Transfer via Proximal Adsorption to Recipients and Upregulated Transformation Genes

Qingbin Yuan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that bacterial debris generated by chlorination increases the natural transformation frequency of extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs) by facilitating their adsorption to recipient cells. In contrast, UV irradiation releases predominantly free eARGs with lower transformation frequency. The collision frequency between eARGs and recipient cells increases when eARGs are adsorbed onto chlorination-generated bacterial debris, leading to increased dissemination potential. This study highlights the importance of different disinfection approaches in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes.
