Promoted electron transfer in Fe2+/Fe3+co-doped BiVO4/Ag3PO4 S-scheme heterojunction for efficient photo-Fenton oxidation of antibiotics

Xi Zhang et al.

Summary: A Fe2+/Fe3+ co-doped BiVO4/Ag3PO4 S-scheme heterojunction catalyst was synthesized and applied for efficient photo-Fenton degradation of antibiotics. The codoping of Fe3+/Fe2+ resulted in a red shift of optical absorption edge and adjustable band structure. The collaborative system of photocatalytic and Fenton showed high catalytic activity and stability in water treatment and wide pH conditions. The mechanism exploration indicated the efficient pairs separation and degradation pathway of antibiotics. This work provides new insights into catalytic mechanisms in heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation systems.

Characterizing membrane fouling formation during ultrafiltration of high-salinity organic wastewater

Weiwei Cai et al.

Summary: The study found that high concentrations of Na+ in high-salinity wastewater were beneficial for ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin solution, but posed adverse effects on ultrafiltration of humic acid solution, while the addition of Ca2+ or Al3+ exacerbated fouling of bovine serum albumin. Additionally, membrane rejection decreased significantly in the presence of various salts.

Coupling nitrogen/oxygen self-doped biomass porous carbon cathode catalyst with CuFeO2/biochar particle catalyst for the heterogeneous visible-light driven photo-electro-Fenton degradation of tetracycline

Shuaishuai Xin et al.

Summary: A heterogeneous visible-light driven photo-electro-Fenton system was developed using nitrogen/oxygen biomass self-doped porous carbon (NO/PC) cathode catalyst and CuFeO2/biochar particle catalyst to degrade tetracycline. By optimizing the CuFeO2/biochar loads, initial pH and current density, the energy consumption was reduced and tetracycline mineralization was promoted. The degradation pathway and Escherichia coli growth inhibition experiments showed that the catalytic degradation of the H-VL-PEF system alleviated the comprehensive toxicity of tetracycline.

Distinct impacts of natural organic matter and colloidal particles on gypsum crystallization

Tianchi Cao et al.

Summary: The study found that the presence of natural organic matter (SRHA) significantly increased the induction time of gypsum crystallization and altered the crystal morphology. On the other hand, the presence of colloidal particles affected the induction time of gypsum crystallization, with crystals formed in the presence of colloidal particles exhibiting a needle-like morphology.

Sulfate and divalent cations recovery from municipal nanofiltration concentrate using two-step ion exchange membrane electrolysis

Xiaobin Tang et al.

Summary: This study recovered calcium ions, magnesium ions, and sulfate from municipal nanofiltration concentrate through a two-step ion exchange membrane electrolysis process. The process reduced the concentrations of calcium cation, magnesium cation, and sulfate anion, and also removed dissolved organic carbon.

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process for algal toxin mineralization in seawater desalination

Abayomi Babatunde Alayande et al.

Summary: It is crucial to remove algal toxins from discharged brine to protect marine life and human health. This study examined the mineralization of a specific algal toxin in highly concentrated seawater using an ultraviolet light activated peroxymonosulfate system, and found that the presence of certain anions reduces the mineralization efficiency.

Highly enhanced dephosphorylation of phytic acid via pre-complexation of PA-Fe2+ in the Fenton system: High activity, wide pH range and ferryl-based mechanism

Yiguang Qian et al.

Summary: This work proposed an efficient abiotic dephosphorylation method using improved Fenton reaction for phytic acid degradation. The pre-complexation of phytic acid with Fe2+ was found to enhance the catalytic performance and extend the pH range of the reaction, showing great potential for preventing water eutrophication and sustainable development of phosphorus resources.

Membrane-Confined Iron Oxychloride Nanocatalysts for Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Fenton Water Treatment

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: The study achieved the degradation of organic pollutants in complex water matrices by loading iron oxychloride catalysts into the pores of a ceramic ultrafiltration membrane. The membrane, with a pore size that excludes natural organic matter, selectively exposed smaller organics to hydroxyl radicals, effectively inhibiting the degradation of organic pollutants.
