Reinterpretation of the mechanism of coagulation and its effects in waste activated sludge treatment

Hou-Feng Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the coagulation mechanisms in wastewater and sludge treatment differ, as evidenced by the opposite changes in COD after adding coagulants. The addition of coagulants not only reduced the pH of sludge but also promoted the disintegration and release of extracellular substances. These findings provide a better understanding of the coagulation mechanism in sludge dewatering treatment.

Flocculation with heterogeneous composition in water environments: A review

Que Nguyen Ho et al.

Summary: Flocculation is a critical process for controlling the fate and transport of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in water environments. However, the lack of comprehensive research on the composition and structure of flocs has led to misconceptions about the dynamics of SPM. This review summarizes the current understanding of the heterogeneous composition of flocs and discusses the effects of human activities on floc composition.

Kinetically Controlled, Scalable Synthesis of γ-FeOOH Nanosheet Arrays on Nickel Foam toward Efficient Oxygen Evolution: The Key Role of In-Situ-Generated γ-NiOOH

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: A kinetically controlled hydrolysis strategy was proposed for the scalable synthesis of gamma-FeOOH nanosheets arrays with enhanced structural stability on diverse substrates. The systematic elucidation of the underlying mechanisms for the growth of gamma-FeOOH NAs associated with their structural evolution was achieved through alkalinity-controlled synthesis and time-dependent experiments.

Mechanistic insights into the effect of poly ferric sulfate on anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Xuran Liu et al.

Summary: Poly ferric sulfate (PFS) has a significant impact on methane production in activated sludge, leading to decreased methane potential and production rate, as well as extended lag time. PFS causes physical enmeshment, disrupts enzyme activity, and inhibits the bioprocess of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and methanogenesis.

Dynamic interactions at the mineral-organic matter interface

Markus Kleber et al.

Summary: Minerals and organic matter interact in soils and sediments, affecting biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem functioning. Minerals are assumed to protect organic matter from degradation and promote the persistence of carbon. Various mechanisms such as adsorption, catalysis, and oxidation are involved in mineral-organic interactions, highlighting the complexity of these processes in environments.
