Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices for cancer diagnosis

Ahmed A. Shalaby et al.

Summary: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and early diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment. In developing countries, there is a need for low-cost, accurate, and easy to use point-of-need (PON) devices for cancer diagnosis and treatment follow-up. Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) are considered a key solution as they provide a low-cost platform for developing PON biosensors. This review discusses the various factors involved in the development of PADs for cancer biomarker detection and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Cauliflower-like platinum nanostructures mediated photothermal and colorimetric dual-readout biosensor for sensitive cholesterol detection

Pramod K. Gupta et al.

Summary: A nanozyme-mediated dual-readout (colorimetric and photo-thermal) bioassay was developed for straightforward and sensitive detection of cholesterol. The dual-readout sensor combines cholesterol oxidase-catalyzed cholesterol oxidation with CS@Pt NS-catalyzed TMB oxidation, using oxidized TMB as a probe for colorimetric and photothermal readouts. The linear detection range is 0-2 mM, with a detection limit of 45 μM for the colorimetric assay and 25 μM for the photothermal assay. The sensor successfully detects cholesterol in spiked human serum with acceptable accuracy.

Effective Degradation of Novichok Nerve Agents by the Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework MOF-808

Martijn C. de Koning et al.

Summary: MOF-808 has been found to be a highly efficient and regenerable catalyst for the hydrolysis of Novichok agents. The degradation of Novichoks proceeds in two consecutive hydrolysis steps, with an intermediate acting as a competitive substrate. Under acidic conditions, a moderately toxic intermediate is formed, which can be efficiently hydrolyzed by MOF-808 under basic conditions.

A colorimetric smartphone-based platform for pesticides detection using Fe-N/C single-atom nanozyme as oxidase mimetics

Jia Ge et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel highly sensitive colorimetric platform based on FeN/C SAzyme was designed for malathion assay. The synthesized SAzyme could directly oxidize 3,3,' 5,5 '-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate oxidized TMB, which exhibited a blue color. The addition of malathion hindered the ACP activity and restored the catalytic activity of single-atom nanozyme, enabling the quantitative detection of malathion.
