Summary: Plasma arc additive manufacturing technology has practical applications in various fields, and non-destructive testing of workpiece quality monitoring requires high levels of accuracy and real-time capability. A new image recognition system using a fully convolutional network (FCN) can quickly and accurately extract melt pool and plasma arc morphologies, outperforming conventional and artificial intelligence methods in image segmentation.

Summary: This paper investigates the integration of a range resolved interferometry instrument into a wire + arc additive manufacturing system for in-process monitoring. The results show that the in-process measurements from the interferometry instrument are in good agreement with other measurement methods, with a small deviation. The high depth of field and cost-effectiveness make this method very interesting for routine use in additive manufacturing systems.

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM) is a powerful manufacturing technology with increasing demands, but controlling the geometry of deposited objects remains a challenge. This study developed an online geometry estimation methodology using a laser line scanner during the directed energy deposition (DED) process, allowing real-time scanning and comparison of as-designed and as-built models for high-precision prototypes.

Summary: This paper introduces an online layer-by-layer controller for improving the geometric accuracy of wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). The controller compensates for geometric errors by measuring the deposited geometry, comparing it with the CAD model, and generating new welding parameters. Two control strategies, PID algorithm and MPC algorithm, are proposed and evaluated. The research shows that increasing the complexity of the control algorithm improves the real-time control performance and reduces geometric fluctuations in the test component. The adaptiveness of the control strategy is also verified by accurately controlling the fabrication of a complex geometry part.

Summary: Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is gaining attention for its ability to produce large parts quickly and cost-effectively, but faces challenges with variable layer height causing geometric inaccuracies. This paper proposes an online layer height control and toolpath replanning method, along with different control algorithms, to ensure correct geometry in manufactured parts.

Summary: The Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) of large thin-walled aluminium structures in the aerospace field has advantages over traditional subtractive approaches. However, for parts with sharp corners, shape control is challenging due to self-overlapping of deposition at corners. A shape control strategy was proposed to reduce errors through local optimization of deposition parameters at corners, achieving more than 50% error reduction for corners with varying angles.

Summary: Directed energy deposition (DED) is a branch of additive manufacturing (AM) processes that allows for site-specific deposition and repair, alloy design, and complex shape printing. This review critically examines recent advances in laser-material interactions, melt pool thermal behavior, and monitoring techniques, while also discussing critical processing variables, defect formation mechanisms, and high-end applications and challenges associated with DED processing.
