Using Digital Technology to Quantify Habitual Physical Activity in Community Dwellers With Cognitive Impairment: Systematic Review

Riona Mc Ardle et al.

Summary: This systematic review explores the role of habitual physical activity (HPA) in individuals with dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), highlighting the use of digital technology for objective measurement of HPA. The review reveals limitations in standardization of methods, protocols, and metrics, as well as the lack of longitudinal research and associations between HPA metrics and clinically meaningful outcomes. Recommendations include validation of methods, development of a core set of clinically meaningful HPA outcomes, and further investigation of socioecological factors influencing HPA participation in individuals with cognitive impairment.

Assessing real-world gait with digital technology? Validation, insights and recommendations from the Mobilise-D consortium

M. Encarna Mico-Amigo et al.

Summary: This study assessed and validated DMOs estimated from real-world gait data in six different cohorts, including gait sequence detection, foot initial contact detection (ICD), cadence (CAD), and stride length (SL) estimates. The study found cohort-specific algorithms for gait sequence detection and CAD, while ICD and CAD algorithms showed excellent results. Short walking bouts and slow walking speeds negatively affected algorithms' performances.

The Impact of Environment on Gait Assessment: Considerations from Real-World Gait Analysis in Dementia Subtypes

Riona Mc Ardle et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different environments (such as lab and real world) on gait, using different walking bout lengths in the real world as proxy measures of context. Significant differences in gait impairments between dementia subtypes were found in both lab and real-world settings, indicating the importance of context in assessing gait in clinical practice.

Objective Quantification of In-Hospital Patient Mobilization after Cardiac Surgery Using Accelerometers: Selection, Use, and Analysis

Frank R. Halfwerk et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the activity levels of cardiac surgery patients during their hospital stay, using accelerometers for monitoring. The research found that patients gradually increased their time spent standing, walking, and climbing stairs during the hospital stay, with no significant differences observed between male and female patients.

Wearable Sensor-Based Real-Time Gait Detection: A Systematic Review

Hari Prasanth et al.

Summary: Traditionally, gait analysis has been conducted in a laboratory setting using expensive equipment, but recently wearable sensors have made real-time gait analysis possible in clinical applications and daily living. Wearable sensors, such as inertial measurement units, have been widely used for gait analysis, with the most common techniques being rule-based methods relying on threshold or peak detection. Despite the potential for applications in pathological gait, the validation of proposed methods on such data remains limited.
