Thalamo-cortical network is associated with harmaline-induced tremor in rodent model

Jeyeon Lee et al.

Summary: By using a rat HA-induced tremor model, this study investigated the electrophysiological response of the motor circuit, including the vlTh and M1, and the modulatory effect of thalamic DBS. The results showed that theta and HFO band powers significantly increased in both vlTh and M1 after HA administration, and this activity was modulated by propranolol and thalamic DBS. Theta band phase synchronization between vlTh and M1 was enhanced during HA-induced tremor, and the cross-frequency coupling in vlTh was associated with the state of HA-induced tremor.

Closing the loop: Novel quantitative fMRI approach for manipulation of the sensorimotor loop in tremor

S. Sharifi et al.

Summary: Tremor is considered to be an effect of oscillatory activity in the sensorimotor network, but the underlying pathological brain networks are not fully understood. This study aimed to disentangle the sensorimotor system into driving and feedback/compensatory involvement, and investigate tremor activity in ET and tremor-dominant PD using a closed-loop approach. The results showed similar activation patterns in the motor and sensory networks for ET patients and healthy controls, while PD patients had less activity during active motor tasks. These findings contribute to a better understanding of tremor pathophysiology.

Altered spontaneous brain activity in essential tremor with and without resting tremor: a resting-state fMRI study

Jun-ying Li et al.

Summary: This study used rs-fMRI to investigate brain activity differences between drug-naive patients with rET and ETwr. Both ET subgroups showed decreased ALFF or fALFF values in certain brain regions compared to HCs, with specific differences in the hippocampus, motor cortices, and cerebellum. These findings suggest distinct functional activities in the limbic system and cerebellum between rET and ETwr subtypes.

Imaging the response to deep brain stimulation in rodent using functional ultrasound

Rohit Nayak et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of using functional ultrasound imaging to visualize cerebral activation associated with thalamic deep brain stimulation in rodents. The results showed that fUS imaging can identify DBS-evoked cerebral cortex activation, with low frequency stimulation having a higher activation effect on the primary motor cortex compared to higher frequencies. This preliminary study is an important step towards conducting real-time functional ultrasound imaging of DBS in awake and behaving animal models.

Functional ultrasound imaging: A useful tool for functional connectomics?

Jose Maria Martinez de Paz et al.

Summary: Functional ultrasound (fUS) is a hemodynamic-based neuroimaging technique with high spatiotemporal resolution, large field of view, and compatibility with behavior, making it well-suited for studying patterns of correlated activity between brain regions and brain-wide pathways associated with behavior. By combining fUS with optogenetics, its capabilities can be further enhanced, promising a significant impact in multi-modal studies.

Bedside functional monitoring of the dynamic brain connectivity in human neonates

Jerome Baranger et al.

Summary: This study utilizes functional ultrasound for bedside deep brain resting-state functional connectivity imaging in neonates, revealing interhemispheric connectivity in preterm newborns and fine-grain correlations within brain tissue. Furthermore, decreased occurrence of thalamo-cortical networks is observed in very preterm neonates compared to control term newborns, suggesting potential applications for early brain function monitoring.

Essential tremor

Thomas Welton et al.

Summary: Essential tremor is a common movement disorder characterized by upper limb action tremor, with potential cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Genetics play a major role in ET risk, but environmental factors may also be involved. Treatment options include medication, deep brain stimulation, and ultrasound thalamotomy.

Imaging the Pathophysiology of Essential Tremor-A Systematic Review

Summary: Functional imaging studies consistently show altered functional connectivity in the cerebellum and cerebello-thalamico-cortical circuitry. Structural imaging studies are less consistent, with no clear evidence for cerebellar neurodegeneration, but diffusion tensor imaging robustly points toward microstructural cerebellar changes.
