FRAMED: An AutoML Approach for Structural Performance Prediction of Bicycle Frames

Lyle Regenwetter et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) methods as surrogate models in engineering design problems, specifically in the challenging task of bicycle frame design. The authors introduce a parametric dataset of 4500 bicycle frames and formulate performance prediction and feasibility prediction problems. By using Bayesian hyperparameter tuning and neural architecture search, they show that the proposed AutoML models outperform gradient boosting and neural network surrogates in classification and regression tasks. This work provides a valuable dataset and benchmark problems for practitioners and researchers, highlighting the advantages of AutoML in machine learning tasks.
